  • Women and the right to vote

    Women and the right to vote
    Positive - During the 1st world war, National
    Female relatives of any person in the military who was serving or served with Canada or Great Britain during the First World War. Also women serving in the military gained the right to vote.
    Women after their contribution to the war effort received the right to vote in Manitoba in January 1916, Alberta and Saskatchewan followed Manitoba's example in 1916 and In BC and Ontario in 1917.

    The battle of Vimy Ridge
    Positive - For the first time in history Canadians fight together as a unit. Canada under Byng's leadership takes control of the Vimy ridge and CEF proves it self as respected fighting force
    This is a postive because all the canadian troops fought togeather and had a feeling of canadian identity.

    The Conscription Crisis
    Negative - After the Battle of the Somme, Canada was in desperate need to replenish its supply of soldiers; however, there were very few volunteers to replace them. Borden announced that he would introduce the Military Service Act on August 29, 1917. The Act was passed: allowing the government to conscript men across the country if the Prime Minister felt that it was necessary.

    Paris Peace Conference
    Positive - In order to restore peace there was a meeting in Paris in 1919 to discuss agreements for peace. This was positive event for Canada because they got recognized as their own nation and got an independant seat in the Treaty of Versailles.
    It is positive because Canada was recognized as a fighting force and they got a seat a the league of nations

    The Chanak Crisis
    Positive - When Britain had asked Canada to support them in Turkey during the Chanak Crisis, instead of automatically supporting Britain, Prime Minister King brought the issue to parliment. This was the first time Canada didnt automatically support the British Empire, further building independance.
    This is important because Canada for the first time took the decision on their own.

    Positive - Canada negotiated a treaty with the United States of America to protect halibut along the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska. This was a big and positive step for Canada as this was the first treaty Canada negotiated and signed independently.

    The King-Byng Crisis
    Positive -The King-Byng Crisis occured in 1926 when governor general Byng refused to listen to Prime Minister King's wishes to disolve parliment and call an election. This caused the King-Byng Crisis and since then no governor general has gone against the wishes of the Prime Minister. This is a positive event for Canada as it shows less of Brtian's involvement in Canadian government.

    In 1926 Canada and other prominent came together to discuss their role in the British Empire.Lord Balfour, issued a report that declared that Britain and the Dominions of Canada and others were "autonomous Communities within the British Empire, equal in status, though united by a common allegiance to the Crown, and freely associated as members of the British Commonwealth of Nations."     Positive - The creation of this law converted the British Empire into the British Commonwealth which will cause all commonwealth countries to be free and equal status with Britain. This is a positive event for Canada as Canada is now equal and Britain can make its own laws.

    Positive - Unlike WWI where Canada was automatically at war when Brtiain declared war, in WWII Canada is now an autonomus country and voted in parliment to join the war. This is a positive for Canada because Canada was able to decide as their own people on what they wanted to do.

    The Suez Crisis
    Positive - The Suez Crisis in Egypt was a situation where Canada took a leading role in United Nations. Instead of supporting Britains policy, Prime Minister Pearson worked with the United Nations to work out a solution. He later won the Nobel Peace Prize. This was a positive because it shows Canadas role as a peace keeping nation on the international stage.

    Positive :
    The flag debate in Canada was caused from the belief of many people saying that the Red Ensign was to British to be representitive of all Canadians.Eventually the red and white maple leaf flag was chosen and this demonstrated a new and positive independance for Canada. This is positive because Canada got a new Identity instead of the same old British symbol in the flag.
