    Spies in Canada: Gouzenko Affair
    Ihor Gouzenko was sent to Ottawa, Canada in 1943 to spy on the Canadian government and one of his major accomplishments was to steal the secrets of the atomic bomb. In 1945 he learned he was about to be sent back to Russia so he offered the Canadian government secret documents exposing the work of the Soviet spies and in return he got permanent protection.

    The American had full control over the major city of Berlin in Germany. The Soviets tried to prevent Berlin from getting supplies so they built a blockade all around the city. To deliver supplies to the German people the Americans had to do air drops. This worked and in May 1949 the blockade was removed because it served no purpose anymore.

    Several countries in Western Europe formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This organization is a defence pact intended to protect members against further Soviet aggression. The twelve founding countries are: Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the United States.

    Communist China decided to attack South Korea but the Americans supported the South Korean's against this communist aggression. The United Nations condemned the attack and called on all UN members to assist South Korea. This victory ensured independence of South Korea.

    Israel wanted to control the Suez canal in Egypt but Egypt wasn't fond of them taking it so they had a confrentation over this canal which resulted in military conflict. Pearson who was the secretary pf state for external affairs created a plan to end all shooting and for the UN to monitor the withdrawl of all invading forces. He recieved the Nobel prize for his efforts. The UN later forces Israel to remove its presence in Egypt and the crisis ended.

    Russia launched a sattelite that was successful but it could also be used to deliver a nuclear warhead to any spot in North America. This created fear in people located in North America so they built more bombs and long ranged missiles.

    Avro Arrow was a advanced fighter jet built by the Canadians but the production was cancelled. It was cancelled because he wanted to spend the money on a already-made American Bomarc missiles for Canada's defense which cut 14000 jobs from canadians.

    NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) was created in 1958 because Canada needed a defense system against enemy missiles. They created the DEW line (Distant Early Warning) system which locates active missiles and reports them to defend North America.

    In Canada the government did not tell the public about how the missiles they had were tipped with nuclear tips. The Canadians had a ban on missiles but the government still kept some in case of emergency.

    A wall built by the German Democratic Republic that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. When the fall of the Berlin Wall occured it led Germany to reunification and a new German government.

    American satellites had spotted nuclear missiles being built in communist Cuba which could be launched to hit any city in North America. To solve this the Americans created a blockade and the Soviets turned their ships away before reaching Cuba to prevent war.

    The Canadians played in the Summit Series which held games against the Soviets in Canada and Russia. The Canadians won the series but there was a strong hatred against the Soviets that kept increasing.

    The Soviet Union collapsed and created 16 countries. This was because democracy overpowered the Soviets and creeped into many countries controlled by the Soviets. The Soviets were on a downfall and could not recover the land that they had lost.
