  • Alaskan Border Dispute

    Alaskan Border Dispute
    The coastal area of British Columbia- An area full of important resources. Canada wanted to take the resources there but so did America. Debate between countries discussed in joint commission of 6 officials from America(3), Canada(2) and Britain.
    Britain- Last deciding vote. Canada thought Britain would side with them because previously Canada had Britains back and fought the Boer War with them but instead, Britain sided with America because they wanted to keep good relations with them.
  • Battle of Vimy Ridge

    Battle of Vimy Ridge
    During WWI, Britain and France attempted an attack on one of Germany’s strongest positions and failed. Canada was then called to fight that area and succeeded. All four nations of Canada fought together and overtook the position in only a few hours. Canada was recognized as the shock troops from then on and were given the hardest jobs. With this victory, Sir Arthur Currie, commander of Canada first division was knighted for his strategy to take over the position.
  • Chanak Affair

    Chanak Affair
    Turkish troops threatened to attack British forces who were stationed at an area called Chanak, Turkey demanded to have it. British called Canada for support and PM King said that Canada would make their own foreign policy decisions and only parliament can decide.
  • The Halibut Treaty

    The Halibut Treaty
    The halibut treaty was an American-Canadian agreement about fishing in the North Pacific Ocean. Usually agreements like this are negotiated by Britain but PM King insisted that this agreement was only between US and Canada, it was then signed solely by Canada.
  • King-Byung Crisis

    King-Byung Crisis
    Governor General Byng refused to call new elections by request from PM King and in the future, no Governor ever refused advice from the prime minister. Governor General then became a representative of the British crown.
  • Balfour Report

    Balfour Report
    The balfour report was a document that confirmed that Canada was an independent country of its own. In a conference of Britain colonies and Dominions, PM King declared that he wanted Canada to be its own free nation, as a result, Canada was now a commonwealth nation with Britain, meaning that they were equal and united.
  • Statute of Westminister

    Statute of Westminister
    On 11 December 1931, the Statute of Westminister was passed, where Britain granted full legal power to all commonwealth dominions, which includes Canada.
