    The League of Nations was the first international intergovernmental organization whose main goal was to maintain world peace. The league nations were created during the Paris peace conference of 1919 after the First World War.
    The League of Nations is important to Canada’s Autonomy because League membership brought Canada its first official contact with foreign governments.
  • Chanak Affair - 1922

    Chanak Affair - 1922
    The Chanak Affair refers back to 1922 when both Britain and Turkey were in conflict because they both wanted the small area of Chanak. Ultimately, Britain had asked for support from the Canadian military however the Prime Minister, Lyon Mackenzie King stated that it would only be Canada’s decision. This sparked one of Canada’s first steps to becoming an independent country when it came to world affairs since it was decided that Canada would make its own foreign policy decisions.

    The Halibut Treaty - 1923
    The Halibut Treaty is a treaty between Canada and the USA that was signed in 1923 who made an agreement regarding the Halibut fishing season in the North Pacific Ocean. The Halibut Treaty came as a result of depleting the Halibut stock in the North Pacific, the fishing grounds shared by Canada and America. The treaty was the first ever treaty Canada negotiated with and signed independently by the Canadian Government. This is one step Canada took to become an autonomous country.
