    Canada and Newfoundland Enter the First World War

    After Britain declared war on Germany the next day, Canada and Newfoundland were forced to go into war as they were dominions of the British Empire. This situation proved to have both pros and cons. Though, Canada was forced to employ men into the battlefield, it proved that Canada was a valuable and reliable alley to Britain.

    Declaration of War Measures Act

    The Declaration of War Measures Act gave the Canadian Government the ability to mass arrest people without charges or trials. This did assist in arresting many people, but it did not allow the people taken to have the opportunity to explain their side, which could be interpreted as unfair arrests. The Act was originally meant to “suspend the civil liberties of people in Canada who were considered enemy aliens” which is stated in the Canadian Encyclopedia (2013).

    The Battle of Ypres was the very first major battle for Canada. In this war, more than 6, 000 soldiers were killed, wounded, and/or captured. This battle had been a major loss for Canada, but Canada managed to fight through and keep Germany from breaking through.

    The discovery of Insulin in 1921 by Dr. Frederick G. Banting. According the medicalnewstoday (2018), he was able to isolate the secretions from islet cells and tout them as a potential treatment for diabetes. This discovery was one that went down in Canadian history and has helped thousands.

    First Woman Elected to Parliament

    Agnes MacPhail became the first woman to ever be elected to the Parliament in the Year 1921. She became a stepping stone towards the future of all women. Agnes worked towards bringing justice to all Canadian farmers, immigrants and many other marginalized groups.

    When Britain was attacked by Turkey and requested help from Canada, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King declined the request. The Chanak Affair had allowed Canada to make its own decisions and proved that Canada had the capability to be an independent country and not be loyal to Britain as much.
