Ghana taken over
in 1235 A.D. the malinke people over threw Ghana and established Mali. Mali came to power in the area that had been Ghana. It spread over large areas to the north and west along the upper Nigger River. -

Byzantine recapture Constantinople
The Byzantine empire lasted for almost 200 years. It never really gained strength. Around the 1300's th Ottoman Turks began to threaten the Byzantine territory. By the mid 1300's the ottomans began to move into the Balkans. -

Mansa Musa
Mansa Musa brought Mali to its peal power in the early 1300's. He was a supporter of education, arts, and public buildings. The cirty of Timbuktu became a leading center of learning under Mansu Musa's rule. Disputes over Mansa Musa's successor weakend Mali greatly. -

Aztecs
They settled on an island in Lake Texcoc and built their city, Tenochtitlan. The Tenochtitlans uncluded pyramid-temples, marketplaces, and palaces for nobles and wealthy families. They held up to 200,000 people or even more. The Aztec artisians learned metalworking, pottery making, and weaving from the people they conquered. -

Sonni 'Ali
Captured Timbuktu and built up the kingdom of Songhai. The city of Gao became one of West Africa's busiest commercial centers. The kingdom stretched from the Atlantic to lake Chad. Sonni Ali's successor was Mohammed I Askia. They built Songhai into a strong kingdom.
