Ghana

500-1203. Is located in present day Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania. It thrived on salt and gold trade. Ancient Ghana has no ties to modern day Ghana beside the name.

Hausa

1200-1900s. It is found in most of modern day Western Africa. These were trading kingdoms dealing in gold, cloth, and leather goods. They also established a caliphate to take over aristocracy.

Yoruba(Oyo)

1300s-1905. Yorubas were found in present day Nigeria and Benin. The Yorubas evolved a military system that allows them to develop weaponry. They also developed a cabinet government system.

Mutapa

1430-1760. It was in modern day Zimbabwe.Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe.The monument, which first began to be constructed in the 11th century and which continued to be built until the 14th century, spanned an area of 1,784 acres and at its peak could have housed up to 18,000 people.

Benin

A pre-colonial African nation in what is now modern Nigeria.It should not be confused with the modern-day country called Benin, formerly called Dahomey.The original people and founders of the Benin Empire, the Edo people were initially ruled by the Ogisos (Kings of the Sky) who called their land Igodomigodo.

Songhai

1464-1591. Songhai was in present day Gambia, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Mauritania. It rose from the ruins of the Mali empire. Was destroyed by civil war.

200 B.C- 1235. Mali was in present day Gambia, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, and Mauritania. It was formed when an exiled prince revolted against a king. Mansa Kankan Musa was a great ruler of Mali.
