    Ghana Empire

    The Ghana Empire had a lot of gold which it got its wealth and power from along with the introduction of the camel to Ghana. Arab writers were the source for most of the knowledge in the Ghana Empire. The capital is Kumbi Saleh and it became the center of trade. The Ghana Empire was located in Western Mauritania and Eastern Mali.

    Mali

    Mali was a west african empire and was heavily influenced by it. The founder was Sundiata Keita. The rulers were famous for being incredibly wealthy and they kept to the original religion. Ideas from Mali spread through the Niger River to other areas. Mali is located in modern day countries including Mali, Senegal, and Southern Mauritania.

    The reason the Empire was named Songhai is after the people who lead it, the Songhai. The Songhai Empire was located in NorthEastern Africa and was in modern day countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Nigeria. The first Emperor of the Songhai was Sonni Ali.

    Was in present day Nigeria. They spoke Yoruba, and their capital was Oyo-lle and they used constitutional monarchy for their form of government. They were involved in the slave trade in the early 1800’s, they sold their prisoners from other empires and sold them to Dutch and Portuguese buyers.

    Benin

    It was a precolonial African nation that was in present day Nigeria. Their government system was a monarchy and they spoke Edo, and were named the Edo people(s). They were annexed (taken over/ joined into a country) into the British Empire in 1897.

    The Hausa were organized in a group of feudal states historically. Legend tells of a man named Bayajida who slayed a snake that had previously only allowed the people of the local area to drink once a week out of the well. This accomplishment led to the exiled prince to be offered the hand in marriage of the Queen of Dura in Marriage. The Hausa Feudal sates were located mainly in Niger and Nigeria, and a small population of people in countries further West, for example Ghana.
