    Trail of Death linkChief Menominee refused to sell his land and led the resistance of the Potawatomi. General John Tipton was put in charge of removal and forced them to march from their homeland in September. Many died along the trail before they reached Kansas on November 4, 1838.

    Trail of TearsCherokees tried to resist, but eventually they were forced to sign a treaty that stipulated that they leave their land by 1838. President Van Buren had the U.S. Army force them on the westward march called Trail of Tears because 1/4 of 15,000 on march died.
