Canadian soldiers in the trenches returning from the first world war brought back the deadly influenza. Some soldiers who have survived the first world war has come back finding out that their family has been killed by the influenza.     Prohibition Of Alcohol In Canada
    Prohibition of alcohol has been approved by the Canadian government. The idea was influence by the American prohibition of alcohol. They approved of this because many people believed that alcohol can be very harmful to the person abusing it or to others as well. Because of this, many people started to make their own alcohol or sell them illegaly. Nicknames given to these people were "bootleggers" meaning that they would store alcohol products in their boots so they would not get caught.

    The Winnipeg General Strike was about the massive unemployment and inflation going on. Within hours 30,000 people have left their jobs. The effects were crippling transits, closing down factories, decrease in mailmen, police, fire men and much more. The people on strike wanted better working environments and better wages. This is an important event because it was the platform for future labour reforms. This is related to politics and to the economy.

    The group of seven were a group of seven talented canadian landscape painters. Franklin Carmicheal, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. Macdonald and F.H. Varley. They were important to Canada's history because they have influenced many modern day painters to paint in their style. Without them then some of the art today might be very different.

    In the year of 1922, Frederick Banting and his colleagues discovered Insulin. Insulin is a hormone the regulates steroid metabolism and fat in the human body. Insulin is also used by the cells in a body to use the glucose in the blood stream. This was a great discovery because it could prevent you from dying of diabetes.     Chinese exclusion act
    This was the date that the act has passed where the Chinese were not eligiable to live in Canada. Only students, merchants and diplomats were allowed to stay. From 1923 to 1947 only eight chinese people came into Canada. The act was removed during 1937 but effects lasted for about twenty more years. This happened because when the rail road was completed, the Chinese wanted to stay and live in Canada. The Canadians were scared that they will take away jobs etc. from them so they made this act.

    The Royal Candian Air Force was established during this time. Over 100 surplus aircrafts were given from the Britains to the Canadians at that time. This was related to the military because it is directly relating to the military. This is an important event in history because the RCAF played important roles in the second world war and even in our modern day society.

    On black tuesday, the stock market took a huge plunge for the worst. Everyone sold whatever stocks they had to avoid being being greatly affected by the event. Since everyone was selling and no one was buying, the stock prices dropped greatly as well. Some causes were over expansion and production, people spending too much on stocks and leases, high tariffs and too much dependance on the United States. This was directly related to economy. It also had effecs political and militarly.

    Five Cent Speech
    During this month, William Lyon Mackenzie King gave a public speech called the "five cent speech". It was intended to tell the people that the provinces are helping the great depression and black tuesday. He said "would not give them a five-cent piece to those alleged unemployment purposes" and "it is the provinces' responsibility." After the speech was given, R.B. Bennett became the new prime minister.

    The Parliament of the United Kingdom created and act where the dominions of the United Kingdom and the British empire could make their own laws. Six dominions were affected by this including Canada. This was important to Canada because it allowed it to become an independant nation. This event is directly related to politics.   • Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission

     Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission
    During this year the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) station was established. They used a coast to coast brocasting system which allows canadians with radio's to tune in and listen. Leonard Brockington was the first chairman. This was important because without the establishment of this station then there would be no wartime broadcasts and there won't be a CBC in the modern society today.

    The Prime Minister of Canada, Richard Bedford Bennett made a speach on the radio talking about a plan that he thinks would give an end to the great depression. Some things he said were "progressive taxation system, a maximum work week, a minimum wage, closer regulation of working conditions, unemployment, health and accident insurance, a revised old-age pension and agricultural support programs." This event is related to politics and economically.
  • S.S. St. Louis

    S.S. St. Louis
    Many Jewish people that have lived in Germany at that time thought that they should leave the country. S.S. St. Louis was a German ocean liner that had its course set for cuba after stopping in Germany. The Jewish refugees took this opportunity and boarded the ship in hopes of starting a new life in either Cuba or the United states. Both attemps were unsuccsessful. The refugees finally got distributed in parts of europe except for Germany. This is important because it raises awareness for haloc.
