    The Nations turning points
    Austria declared war on Serbia on this date, one month after Franz Ferdinand (the heir to the Austro Hungarian Throne) was assassinated by a Serbian. A war between Austria and Serbia meant a war between Austria and Russia because Serbia and Russia were allies, and that turned into Russia and Germany being at war. Which meant war between Germany and France which lead to war between Germany and Great Britain. Just like that the whole continent was at war with eachother. Help Canada and the US!

    Manay Canadians had emotional ties with Britian. The first batch of Canadians were 70% British born and were eager to do their bit. Germany's brutal Belgian invasion was shocking to many Canadians. Some Canadians had read about war as being a romantic adventure and were longing for the experience, some saught excape from their repetitive work and civilian routine. Many gave up good jobs and lives in order to show patriotism towards thier country.

    When the Germans did not retreat from Belgian, Britian was forced to go to war with Germany due to Britian pledging to defend Belgian's sovereignty In 1914, Canada was a self governed dominion of the British Empire, so when Britian was at war so was Canada. Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier had had stated in 1910 that, "when Britian is at war, Canada is at war. There is no Distinction" Nevertheless Canada greatly debated it's war involvement and in return lost many lives.

    By the end of the war around 619,000 Canadians enlisted for service overseas. An enormous contribution for a population just under 8 Million, not to mention hundreds of thousands of Canadians who worked on the home front during the war. Canada also raised 70 million dollars to aid the war. When war was declared Canadians marched and sang in the streets, showing high Nationalism and their excitement for getting to aid their allies.

    The War Measures Act gave Canada the authority to do whatever necessary for the "security, defence, peace, order and welfare of Canada." The War Measures Act was signed when Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden quickly agreed to round up a contingent of 25,000 Canadian troops upon Britian's request, proving Canada to be a worthy asset.

    Canadians capture Vimy Ridge
    On this day 15,000 Canadian troops rose and concoured Vimy Ridge, when before French and British attacks suffered over 150,000 casualties. Canadian's endured intense trainging to prepare them for this attack. The successful raid left Canadian's with 10,600 killed and wounded. The victory at Vimy is concidered to be a defining event towards Canada's progress in becoming fully independent from britian.

    On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 a cease-fire got put into effect and all parties were at a permanent armistice. The war was over.

    On this date the "Big Three" got together and signed this treaty, created to keep Germany weak enough to not start another war yet strong enough to stop the spread of communism.

    Italian Nationalists capture the port of Fiume
    These Italian nationalists felt that the "Big Three" had broken promises with Italy with the Treaty of Versailles. They captured the small port of Fiume and for 15 months it was governed by an Italian nationalist. The League did nothing. The issue was resolved by the Italian government forcing a surrender upon the nationalists through means of brute fource.

    In the Treaty of Versailles it orders Germany to pay for war damages. When the Germans failed to pay an installment in 1922 due simply to not being able to rather than not wanting to, Belgium and France invaded Germany's most important industrial zone-Ruhr. Directly going against the Treaty of Versailles and the League did nothing. How hipocritical of them.

    The Treaty of Versailles never addressed the issue of the constant irritation caused by the border between Italy and Albania. In 1923, a survey team was sent to suss out the issue. During the trip the Italian section of the team was separated and the five Italians were shot by gunman who had been hiding. Italy then accused Greece and demanded payment of a large fine. Greece refused. The Italians bombarded Corfu, a Greek island, Greece went for the League's help but they had been persuaded by Ita
