  • Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
The 1982 Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms replaced the Canadian Bill of Rights because it was only a federal statute and not a constitutional document. This means that it does not apply to provincial laws and the Supreme Court of Canada could also interpret it any way they like. The new charter is significant to Canadian history because it guarantees that Canadians' rights are protected and it showed the ongoing conflict between Quebec and the federal government.

  • Meech Lake Accord

    Meech Lake Accord
The Meech Lake Accord was an agreement that Brian Mulroney proposed to Quebec so that they would accept the new Constitution. This was a failure because the other provinces did not think that it was fair to give Quebec "distinct society" status since all 10 provinces should be equal. This is significant to Canadian history because this event caused Canadians to hate Brian Mulroney and the possibility of Quebec seperating from Canada was very high at the time.
  • Oka Crisis

    Oka Crisis

The Oka crisis was a 78 day standoff between the town of Oka and the Mohawk people because the town wanted to build a golf course on sacred Mohawk land. This land was "borrowed" by the Quebec government during WW2 but was never returned despite the protests of the Mohawk people. This event is significant to Canadian history because it shows how poorly the government treated Aboriginal people.
  • Rwandan Genocide

    Rwandan Genocide
The Rwandan Genocide was when Hutu extremists began to kill the entire Tutsi population in Rwanda. This event involved Canada because Canadian Major General Romeo Dallaire was the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in Rwanda and he tried to reduce unrest in the country by negotiating cease-fires. The UN originally did not want to acknowledge this genocide but Canada insisted they help and so this event is significant to Canadian history because it shows Canada's involvement in peacekeeping.
  • Creation of Nunavut

    Creation of Nunavut
Nunavut was the newest territory that was created because the Canadian government split the orignial Northwest Territories in half. This was because the Inuktitut living in the territory at the time wanted a self-government and to be more culturally-based. This is significant to Canadian history because this was the first important change to the map of Canada since Newfoundland joined the Conferedation. This also shows how Canada is starting to improve their treatment towards Aboriginal people.

  • Same-Sex Marriage

    Same-Sex Marriage
Same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada in 2005 making Canada the fourth country in the world to do so. The Civil Marriage Act was enacted which meant that there was a new gender-neutral marriage definition. This event has caused clashing between law and religion because Catholic churches had to pay a fine if they didn't allow homosexual couples to get married in their church, This is significant to Canadian history because all Canadians now have the right to marry whoever they want.
  • Ottawa Shooting

    Ottawa Shooting
The shooting at Parliament's Centre Block was when a gunman charged into the Parliament buildings and shot a Canadian Forces member.
