    Vietnam may have been America's war but Canada was heavily involved — for and against. Canada harboured roughly 30,000 American draft dodgers. But at the same time, about 30,000 Canadians volunteered to fight in Southeast Asia. Canada was also involved in secret missions, weapons testing, arms production, and the supervision of ceasefires. Despite a law that made it illegal, many individual Canadians chose to sign up with the U.S. armed forces to fight in Vietnam.

  • NATO

    Spurred by the Treaty of Brussels and the creation of the Soviet Blockade, talks to begin a military alliance to counteract the growing power of the USSR began. This military alliance led to the North Atlantic treaty, signed by Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, the United States, and Canada.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan was a European Recovery Program established by the USA in order to aid Europe after WWII. This contributed to the cold war since it was the USA's way or preventing the spread of Soviet communism throughout Europe. The goals of the plan were to rebuild devastated regions, remove trade barriers, and modernize industries in order to make Europe prosperous.
  • Newfoundland Joins Conferderation

    Whether Newfoundland and Labrador should remain as an independent political organization, or join the federation of the other British North American colonies, was an issue from 1864 to 1949. In 1864, Newfoundland delegates attended the Quebec Conference and signed the resolutions which became of foundation of the 1867 British North America Act. But it was not until over 80 years later, in 1949, that Newfoundland became a Canadian province.

    The Korean War was Capitalist South Korea verses the Communist North. In essence, it was USSR verses the USA as the USSR supported the North and the USA supported the South in the fighting. This demonstrated a conflict between the nations during the Cold War.
  • Woman's Rights

    Women's rights were enacted during the 1950's as the Female Employers Remuneration Act was created along with in 1970 when The Royal Commission of Women was created. These acts gave women equality amongst men and the ability to receive the same salaries as men.
  • Creation of the Warsaw Pact

    In response to the integration of NATO, the USSR established the Warsaw Pact, signed between the USSR, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Czechoslovkia, Bulgaria, and Albania. Each nation pledged for mutual defense between each other if they were to be attacked.
  • John F. Kennedy

    John F. Kennedy was the 35th president of the USA. He was president through a crucial part of the Cold War era, and was in office during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Building of the Berlin Wall, Space Race, Civil rights movement and the beginning of the Vietnam War. John F. Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963.
  • Lester B. Pearson

    Lester B. Pearson, the Secretary of External Affairs of Canada, organized the United Nations Emergency Force to resolve the Suez Crisis. The United Nations Emergency Force was pivotal in ensuring that the Suez Crisis ended peacefully. For his efforts, Lester B. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957.
  • John Diefenbarker

    John George Diefenbaker (Progressive Conservative Party of Canada) was Prime Minister of Canada from June 21, 1957, to April 22, 1963. During his term, he championed the Canadian Bill of Rights in 1958 and gave all Aboriginal people the right to vote in 1960. Mr. Diefenbaker was the first Prime Minister to appoint a woman Cabinet Minister and the first to appoint an Aboriginal person to the Senate.
  • Youth Quake

    A 1960's youth movement in fashion, music, and culture. The teen spectrum revolutionized the media and pop culture. They created trends with mini-skirts, jump suits and big influences included Twiggy and Verushka. This demonstrated growth of Canadian culture in youth and contributions to the Hippie movement.
  • Social Safety Net

    The social Safety Net progressed throughout the 1960's. It created services such as welfare, child support, and other government aids to the public. This shows the formation of Canada regarding its people and methods that are to improve their living standards.
  • Pierre Trudeau

    Pierre Trudeau was the 15th Prime Minister of Canada, and is famous for establishing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In his career, he was very against the Quebec sovereignty movement and attempted to distribute the oil wealth of the prairies amongst Canada. He was a very stubborn and controversial leader, however he participated widely in the creation of Canada's own rights system, visiting Cuba during the cold war, and furthering Canada's relations with the USA and the world.

    After American spy planes took photos of Soviet nuclear missles stationed in Cuba, President John F. Kennedy ordered a blockade of Soviet ships heading to Cuba. As fears of nuclear war were rising, negotiations between John F. Kennedy and Nikita Kruschev eventually dissolved the Cuban Missle Crisis. The Canadian Prime Minister, alongside leaders of numerous nations, supported America's proposed decision to declare war had the Soviets launched their nuclear missles.
  • SALT treaties

    The SALT treaties ( The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks ), were two meetings held between the USA and USSR in order to discuss issues of armament control. These eventually lead to the START treaties that placed limits on the number of weapons that each country was allowed to maintain. This demonstrates responsibility between the nations and understanding that the Cold War may lead to a potential WWIII so they took precautions to make sure that this did not occur
  • White Paper

    The 1969 White Paper (officially entitled Statement of the Government of Canada on Indian policy) was a Canadian policy paper proposal made by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his Minister of Indian Affairs, Jean Chrétien in 1969.
    This paper would abolish the Indian Act and dismantle the established legal relationship between Aboriginal peoples and the state of Canada in favour of equality

    Events triggered by the FLQ in Quebec lead to the use of the War Measures Act in order to capture the terrorists that kidnapped Canadian politicians in order to get attention towards Quebec's sovereignty. Created great tension between French and English relations.
  • War Measures Act

    Human rights were temporarily taken away when the Wartime Measures Act was enacted in order to capture members of the FLQ during the October crisis and prevent further damage of the terrorist actions taking place.
  • David Suzuki

    An environmental activist from Vancouver, Canada. During the 1970s David actively participated in the media and educating people on animals and how to preserve the environment. In 1990 he founded the David Suzuki foundation which contributes to environmental efforts world wide. David is an internationally known environmentalist and contributes to Canada's autonomy and environmental success.
  • Immigration Act

    Canada's immigration policy is the most explicit part of what might be described as a population policy. In a liberal democratic state such as Canada, only the prevailing rates of immigration and not those of mortality, fertility and emigration can be effectively regulated. By regulating the means of selection and by controlling the number of entrants, the government seeks to fulfil a variety of national objectives.

    The USSR invaded Afghanistan to support the Marxist government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, while at the same time to fight against the rising Afghan Mujahideen guerilla movement. Taking place over a span of nine years, the Soviets were unsuccessful and withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989. Canada funded and supported the muhajideen guerilla fighters.

    In 1987 the Progressive Conservative government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney attempted to win Québec's consent to the revised Canadian Constitution — following the Québec government's rejection of it in 1981. The result was the Meech Lake Accord, an agreement between the federal and provincial governments to amend the Constitution by strengthening provincial powers and declaring Québec a "distinct society." Political support for the Accord later unravelled, and it was never put into effect.
  • The Fall of the Berlin Wall

    As freedom increased in the communist states of Eastern and Central Europe, many called for the deconstruction of the Berlin Wall. Citizens from both East and West Germany began to tear at the wall, slowly tearing it down using tools such as hammers. At first, German guards attempted to repair the damage made by the citizens. Finally, on October 3 1990 the Berlin Wall finally fell.
  • Nisga Treaty

    In 1998 a decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal, was held that bringing a court action was sufficient to defeat a claim to Aboriginal title. This alone, if correct in law, would be sufficient to defeat almost every land claim that is brought to court.
