    The origin of Cold War
    The cold war begin during the last days of WW2. The cold war was due to a lot of tension and aggression among countries but not actual fighting,It was basically a rivalry between Soviet Union and USA, a fight between democracy and communism.It was a military ace between the countries and spies were used to defeat enemies.The significance of the war lead to important developments in nuclear weaponry, new inventions and showcasing of the military strengths.

  • Partition of the Sub Continent.

    Partition of the Sub Continent.
    It was the partition of the subcontinent to form two new countries- Pakistan and India based on religious differences between Muslims and Hindus. It started as a simple movement called by different political leaders.
    The partition was significant as not only it ended british rule in the country but also lead to the formation of two separate nations based on different set of principles, beliefs & gave people their desired freedom.

  • New Foundland joins Canada

    New Foundland joins Canada
    The appeal of a welfare state and the politics in the cold war convinced Newfoundland to join confederation. Both Canada and Britain encouraged it.
    Newfoundland was concerns were mainly economic, about their small buisness.
    After a vote was taken the option of confederation won, narrowly.
    It was significant because it gave Canada its 10th province also newfounland's resources were very valuable and the location was very strategic.

    Formation of NATO
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was formed with an aim to defend each other in an attack by the enemies. NATO was joined by all the Allies country, which meant Canada was a part as well.
    It was significant as it was an important milestone in interantional relation and helped to strengthen military.

    Korean War
    North Korea, being communist, backed by Soviet Union launched a massive attack on South Korea and tried to take over it. the war forced UN to take contrl which inloved USA, canada and 16 other countries to sen forces the war didnt give much of a result for the koreans and things went back to normal.
    it was significant as it was the first astive combat between the two superpowers and also the reason for stressed relations between north & south Korea.

  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
    Egypt wanted to nationalise the Suez canal currently in control of Britain and France. Both of the countries were against it and launched a strategic attack on Egypt with the help of Israel. Both USA and Canada were refused to support it and UN had to step in.
    The significance was that the world was on the birk of a 3rd world war, also first time peace keeping mission was organised because of Canada and the crisis showed that Allies wont always support each other.

  • Cuban Crisis

    Cuban Crisis
    The cuban crisis was when Soviet union started piling their missiles in cuba to attack USA. USA got the hint of it and not only consulted the UN but took the matter in their own hands by building blockades. Soviet union were forced to back out.
    It was significant as the realitionship between USA and cuba was strained and still is till today and also the even caused ties between USA and Canada to get tensed, due to canada refusing to cut ties.

    Pearson wanted the flag to be distinctly Canadian.The flag came into being after a year of debate. the flag had no colonial or cultural symbol attached to it. It signifies canadian independence and honors their new status as a country.

    Apollo 11 was the first successful spaceship landthe first humans to land on the moon suceesfully were Americans-Neil Arnstrong and Buzz Aldrin,
    it was a significant event as this has never been done before also it made America win the 'space race' between USA and Soviet Union.

    The National Action Committee
    The national action committee on the status of women were set up/ It mainly focuses on adocating change which will improve the status of women in the long term. It was set up after almost years of struggle and pressure from women rights movements. Several discriminatory acts were removed such as the Canadian labour code.
    It was significant because it allowed women to be viewed in a different light and end all unfairness and wrong acts against them.

  • Bill 22

    Bill 22
    Bill 22 was passed by the liberal government of Robert Bourassa Quebec. It made French basically their national language, making it mandatory to be used in civics administration services. Later on another Bill (101) almost banned the use of english language.
    The significance is that it tensed the french and english Canadian relations and threatened to divide Canada

    Canada Act
    The act forms a part of the consistution of Canada. It was formed to transfer full power to Canada from the Britain. Both the country's parliament approved and finally Queen Elizabeth signed it.
    It was significant Because finallly after 115 years Canada gains complete political independence.
