  • Discovery Of Insulin (social)

    In 1921, Dr. Frederick Banting was researching with a team of scientists at University of Toronto on how to combat diabetes. On July 30th, he injected insulin from a dogs pancreas to another diabetic dog and found a significant drop in blood sugar. This was a revolutionary step in healthcare by a Canadian scientist which helped improve the health of millions of diabetes patients.
  • First Woman Elected as MP (political)

    Agnes MacPhail started her career as a teacher. While she was teaching in Sharon, Ontario, she joined the United Farmers of Ontario(UFO). In 1919, the UFO won a victory in the Ontario provincial election. Then in 1921, she was nominated to represent south-east Grey County in the house of Commons with the progressive party, which the UFO became a part of. This was a major step for Canada in Women's rights, and helped shape Canada into a more progressive nation.
  • The Wall Street Crash Of 1929 (economic)

    In October, 1929, stock prices rapidly decreased. This caused people who took loans to invest to lose a lot of money and gain a lot of debt. Many argue this didn't have a lot to do with the great depression, however this was the start to the great depression, where unemployment rates skyrocketed, suicide rates were also very high, and immigration was extremely low.

    At the start of the great depression, prime minister RB Bennett was elected. Canadians were very angry at him due to his ineffective combat against the great depression. He was made fun of by Canadians. The Bennett buggy, which was a type of transportation used by people who could not afford gasoline, was named after him.

    Dust Bowls (economic)

    During the great depression, the weather conditions during the summer made it hot and dry, which was terrible for growing crops. This led to hunger and worsened Canada's economy at the time. The ground was mostly dust which could not grow wheat and other crops. This was terrible for the economy, in 1928, the prairies farming income was $363 million, and by 1933, the income plummeted to $11 million.
  • Statute of Westminster (political)

    Before December 11, 1931, the British government had major authority over Canada. The Canadian Government did not have much freedom. When the Statute of Westminster was passed, it granted political freedom for Canada. This was a very important step in making Canada a more independent nation.
  • CCF Party Formed (political)

    The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation was founded in 1932. This political party was founded in Calgary by farming organizations. This party wanted to help Canadians who were affected by the great depression. The CCF was later renamed as the NDP, who play an important role in Canadian politics.
  • Invention Of The Snowmobile (social)

    Joseph Armand-Bombardier invented the snowmobile in 1935, then later patented it on the 29th of June, 1937. The machine ran on tracks similar to a tanks. The snowmobile was a very useful invention for travelling in snowy conditions. His company later went on to revolutionize Canadian engineering.
