Sir Robert Borden, Prime Minister of Canada, made a speech at the House of Commons in Ottawa, talking about the war that had just broken out. He states that it is Canada's duty to "stand shoulder to shoulder with Britain and the other British dominions". His speech shows progress as even though he is not happy that Canada will have to go to war, his country is to fight for honorable reasons.

This battle was fought from April 22nd to May 25th, 1915. It occurred in Belgium. This battle was the first major battle that the Canadian troops fought in. The Second Battle of Ypres was the first battle that included a large-scale gas poisoning. This was caused by the Germans towards the Canadians. This event shows progress as Canadians held their positions in the front-line until reinforcements could be brought in. The only thing bad about this even was that a lot of Canadian died.

People that were considered enemy aliens were Canadians with a German or Austro-Hungarian background. In 1917, these people's rights to vote were taken away. After that, the War Measures Act was passed, and the people that were born in enemy countries were imprisoned in camps without being charged or deported without trial. In these camps, they were mistreated and payed very poorly. This is decline because these people were mistreated just because of their country of origin.

This battle was a victory for Canadian troops. It occurred from April 9th to April 12th 1917. Vimy Ridge is in Northern France, and Canadian troops were ordered to capture it. This event shows both progress and decline. This is because Canadians were successful and because of their success they "emerged from the shadow of Britain." This event shows decline as well because there were so many Canadian casualties. Were all those deaths worth it?

Many French-Canadian soldiers felt allied to France and not with Britain. This is why so many of them refused to go to the war. Even if they did go to the war, the manuals and instructions were in English. Not many of them knew how to speak English. As a result of this, they were less likely to be promoted within the armed services, and were alienated from others. (Continuation on Google Docs)

During the war, because there was a shortage of men working in factories as they had gone off the to war, women had to replace them. They worked long hours with barely any breaks. Those that protested, were fired without a second thought. After the war though, women were guilted into leaving their jobs to make more space for the men that were coming back from the war. This is decline as they used women when they had nobody else, and when they were not needed anymore they were asked to leave.

Prohibition was the ban of alcohol in Canada. This included the ban to sell, manufacture, and import alcohol. The only way that it would still be legal to drink it was if you already had alcohol before the prohibition. This law was put in place because of the belief that alcohol was the cause of many soldier's illnesses. Prohibition came with many disadvantages. There was more crime, and many people lost their businesses (people that owned saloons, bars, etc) This is why it shows more decline.

Residential schools were made mandatory to attend on January 21st 1920. A residential school was a school made by Christians and the Canadian government, for Native Canadian children to attend. The objective of these schools was to make these children Christian, and to take away their Indigenous cultures. This is decline as children were treated horribly there, and were forced to give up their cultures and leave their families for long periods of time.

Insulin was discovered by Frederick Banting at the University of Toronto during the summer of 1921. During that time, diabetes started becoming more common and many people were suffering from it. His discovery saved many lives, and helped people that had diabetes live normal lives. For this reason, this event is considered progress.

The famous Five was a group of women activists. According to the British North American act in 1928, women were not considered people. They were petitioners in the Persons case which gave women the right to be appointed to the Senate, and got them to be considered as people. This is considered progress, because they stood up for what was right, and fought to make men and women equal. Although it does not show much progress because women of colour were not included in this.
