    Between the years of 1880 and 1910 workers and wealthy employers organized labour unions which would manage and negotiate the wages of workers and the employers. About 10% of workers joined the unions in 1880.

    The last best west was a sort of marketing slogan to attract people to western Canada in the prairies. This slogan was so successful that a little after 9 years alberta and saskachewan were made in big parts of the northwest territories

    In these changing years new technology was being made to help encourage the development of Canada's already abundant natural resources. The Canadian shield trees were producing new pulp for paper mills which made an increase in the newspaper industry. Other industries such as mining, lumber and fishing also made an increase.

    Wilfred Laurier becomes Prime Minister
    Wilfred Laurier was the 7th Prime Minister of Canada who led canadians through a time of fast growth, industrialization and immigration in his political rein. Laurier was on the side of the Liberals which he took to victory in the 1896 election as he became the Prime Minister of Canada. Lauriers first act was to find a solution to the Manitoba Schools Question which was a political crisis in Manitoba about publicly funded schools with the catholics who he gave there own schools to end the fight

    The Alaskan Boundary Dispute
    This dispute was between Canada and the U.S.A over territory of Alaska. This dipute was resolved by arbitration in 1903 and in the end the U.S.A became the owner of Alaska as a consequence of the Alaskan purchase.

    Immigration was being increased to Canada and most of these new settlers went to the praires. Most of the people left because of high grain prices and push and pull factors.

    After the Railway was completed, Asian workers were no longer needed but they sadly did not have enough money to go back home because of there very low and unfair salary. The asains mainly stayed in either Victoria or Vancouver but since the government did not want them here anymore they legalized racial discrimination.

    The second boer war was a long war with many troops which ended with conversion of the boer republics into British colonies. This war was a major turning point in British history due to the reaction of the anti-insurgency tactics the army had used in the region.

    Once the new settlers came to the prairies they had to come up with $500 in order to buy items that were required at the time. What they needed was a plough, a wagon, a horse and a milking cow. There houses were mainly mud huts on a wooden frame that are called sods.

    Since the ever rising increase in population this was thought to be an opportune time to build another railway. This railway spanned coast to coast and was called the Grand Trunk Railroad which went through the praires.

    Alberta was created as a district of the Northwest Territories and as the settlement increased local political representatives came too. After a long campian for autonomy the district was enlarged and given the status of a province.

    Saskatchewan becomes a province
    Saskatchewan was part of the Northwest Territories but became its own province after many settlers arrived via the railway. Many great battles were fought in saskatchewan like the very first naval battle.

    Since there was a lot of immigration, especially from china, push-pull factors were created. This meant that any new immigrant was required to pay a $50 head tax. The amount of chinese immigrants that were allowed to go over on a boat was limited to 1 person per 50 tonnes.

    The Nisga'a land communities launched a campaign for the rights to there ancestral land. They were the first natives to go into the Canadian political system and after a long fight they finaly recieved the rights to there land.
  • Anti-Asian riots

    The white supremacists marched though vancouvers chinatown and threw a riot and broke windows and shops demanding a white Canada. These riots started up the head tax.

    The Naval race was between Germany and Britain to build up there naval army. Britain came up with 2 more power standards and Canada wanted to help so Laurier came up with the Naval service act.
  • Borden becomes Prime Minister

    Borden becomes Prime Minister
    Robert Borden was the eigth Prime Minister of Canada. Borden served during the time of the first World War and was recognized for his actions around the war. When Borden ran for president he took advantage of the racism that was going on and was for a white Canada. Borden is currently on the $100 bill.
  • Women's Movement

    Women were not always equal to men, people thought they were inferior and needed to stay home and not have rights which gave women low expectations. Women sufferagests fought for a change for women and to have there rights. Later on Manitoba became known as the very first place that allowed women to vote.
