Impressment of Sailors
Great Britain was seizing American ships that were bound for French ports. The British would impress American sailors and non-seamen and take them and put them in British naval forces. They were essentially "kidnapping" Americans. -

Washington issued a Neutrality Proclamation which defined the policy of the United States as a response to the spreading war in Europe. This made it so the United States wouldn't interfere with the wars in Europe. -
Jay's Treaty
Washington sent John Jay to negotiate a treaty with the British. This secured the withdrawal of British soldiers from western forts. This also established a base that America could build a stable national economy. This prevented war with the British for a short time. -
Washington’s farewell address
In Washington's farewell address, he warned the nation about the party system and said that it could split a nation in half. He also warned the nation to no get into long-term alliances with foreign nations. -
Embargo Act
As a way to stop the British and the French from fighting, Jefferson put established the embargo act. This wouldn't be lifted until Britain and France agreed to stop seizing the US ships. This stopped trade with both countries but it backfired because they weren't affected by it since they had their own trade and colonies. -
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
This was a major cause of the War of 1812. A British ship, Leopard, opened fire on USS Chesapeake which was forced to surrender. British soldiers then removed four men from Chesapeake that had deserted the British Navy. This cemented hostile relations with the British and lead to the embargo act. -
Tecumseh (Battle of Tippecanoe)
Tecumseh recruited Indians to his pan-Indian alliance. He said that the only way to overcome their invaders was to unite and resist the American way of life. William Harrison threatened to destroy the village. Tecumseh didn't want to fight until the Confederacy was stronger but his brother ignored and attacked. This started the Battle of Tippecanoe which left the Indians being defeated by Harrison. -
War Hawks
The War Hawks were south and western politicians that wanted to go to war. They wanted to go to war because they the British to stop seizing ships. They believed that the British were financing Indigenous tribes in their resistance. -
War of 1812 Begins
The British restrictions on US trade and America's desire to expand its territory are the cause of the war of 1812. This ended in a treaty called the treaty of Ghent. -
Tecumseh Death
During the war of 1812, Tecumseh rallied his followers to join British forces in Michigan, this helped in defeating American forces at the Siege of Detroit. Tecumseh then joined British Major-General Henry and fought against Harrison and his army. The British were forced to flee after Harrison invaded Canada and they were chased down. Because of this, Tecumseh was killed on October 5, 1813. This left his followers to scatter and move to Indian reservations. -
Hartford Convention
This was a series of meetings in Hartford, Connecticut. This is where the New England federalist party met to discuss their grievances about the War of 1812. This resulted in a declaration calling the Federal Government to protect and to supply aid to New England's bad economy. The federalists threatened to leave and start their own nation if war didn't end. They didn't follow through because the war ended when the threatened. -
Treaty of Ghent
This was a treaty with established the end of the War of 1812. This established that all conquered territory was to be returned, and commissions were planned to settle the boundary of the US and Canada. Great British and The U.S. pledged to work toward ending the slave trade. -
Battle of New Orleans
This is known as the greatest American land victory of the war. The British marched to New Orleans in hopes that they would capture the city and separate Louisiana from the rest of the U.S. This resulted in a battle in which America won.
