    In 1914 the Canadian military discriminated most individuals that were not of British heritage. The Canadian military discriminated Black Canadians, Asian Canadians, Aboriginal People and Canadians of German heritage but when the number of volunteers dropped the military started welcoming Aboriginal People. Many Black Canadians were rejected until 1916 the military also welcomed them along as Asian Canadians. Their work differed from those of British heritage because they did all the hard work.

    Society had changed and became more fair to women since they were restricted to low paying jobs and their job choices were limited. When many men started to enlist in the military, women had to look after their farms and families, but when employers were on a a shortage of workers they started hiring women to do skilled jobs like munitions. The downside of this change were women were paid a fraction of a man's salary for the same job.

    At the beginning of the war factories had closed down and unemployment was high leaving more than 50,000 Canadians in debt. They had no source of income until the military started encouraging citizens to enlist in the military and if they enlisted for the war they would get paid $1.10 a day which allowed households to buy neccesary supplies during the time.

    The Canadian military treated men and women differently since men were allowed to enlist as soldiers while women were allowed to enlist as nurses in Britain or France or drivers in the Air Force. Some nurses worked at field hospitals and others worked a few kilometers from the front line. Working near the fromntline was highly dangerous because they were faced with a high chance of being wounded or killed and the risk of getting an infection or disease.

    In 1915 the first tank was created, Little Willie, was created by the British. The first tank was not used in combat other countries tried to make their own tanks to compete with England. Airplanes were mainly used for reconnaissance by fying over the battlefields and determining where their enemies were. They were also machine guns which at the time was called Vickers machine gun and they were mainly used as an offensive tactic at the front.

    At the beginning of the war everyone was losing their jobs and unemployment was high meaning that it left most people with no source of income. Then when the military started recruiting men they were paid $1.10 a day for enlisting in the war and then when more men were overseas, more job opportunities were available for women. Then IMb opened and they started hiring men and women who had stayed home during the war, most of the employees at the IMB were women which gave them a lot of respect.

    In 1916 the Businnes Profits War Act went into action meaning that any company that has an income of $50,000 or more annually had to file a yearly tax return in order to pay for the war. Another way was Canadians were able to buy war bonds and the money would go to Canada's debt crisis.

    Canada amoung other countries assumed that the war was going to be brief and inexpensive but ended up drawing in more than $2 billion dollars in debt. Canadian citizens who were at home during the war had to loan money to their own government and the government would also ask them to donate their extra food to the soldiers overseas in the war.

    Canada gained the respect of the world during World War 1 since their soldiers would carry out challenging tasks and complete their objectives. Their army had also been created from nothing and gained the world's respect, another reason is beacuse of the army's commander Lt. General Sir Arthur Currie for training these soldiers and for his determination.

    When England decided to join the war Canada was automatically in the war because of Canada’s legal status as a British Dominion which leaves foriegn decisions to the Britain parliment. At that time Canada had only an independant Expeditionary Force which had an estimated 620,000 soldiers. After the sacrifices and contributions Canada had made during the war, the country became more independant and later on had four independant military branches.
