    Martin Luther was one of the first people to openly question the church's beliefs. He also questioned the ethical beliefs of the popes and priests. He created Lutheranism which is still practiced today. This reflects the idea of expressing your own beliefs about the Renaissance.

    Columbus Finds the New Land

    Columbus left Spain in order to find a passage to Asia to help with the war between Europe and Asia. Instead, he ran into the Americas. The Americas had many Native Americans and resources that Europe didn't have. This new land was a huge discovery for resources, but many of the Indians ended up dying due to disease and unwanted violence.

    King Henry VIII

    King Henry was the king of England. He married Catherine, but she only gave birth to a son. He asked for a divorce, so he could marry another woman for a second chance at a son. The church refused, so he went behind their back and married the other woman. Then he started the church of England to fully separate himself and England from the Catholic church.

    The 95 Theses is Posted

    The 95 Theses is what truly separated Luther from the church. He posted all of his questions about the church and its honesty. He thought it became corrupt and decided to post the 95 Theses to prove his point. This drove the church against him.

    The Church of England is Formed

    After the church denied a divorce to King Henry VIII, he formed the Church of England. He could make up the rules in the Church of England. This gave the monarchy full control over the church and the government.

    Jean Calvin is Exiled For Sympathizing With Protestantism

    Jean Calvin questioned the church's beliefs and was exiled for believing something other than what the Catholic Church said. He had already been raised in an environment where the church was being questioned, so he went off to Switzerland and kept trying to figure out the church. He went off to create Calvinism which is very similar to Lutheranism.

    The Pope Ignores the Suffering of the Native People in the New Land

    The church didn't have an explanation for the Indians in the New Land. People thought they were exiled there and ruled by the devil, so they used that as an excuse to murder them. The pope recognized that these people were human but ignored it and let the people torture them. This event shows how corrupt the church was becoming.

    After many people started creating other religions and breaking off from the church. The church decided it needed to be reevaluated. They created the Inquisition to help maintain control of the land. It also created the "Index of Forbidden Books."

    The Inquisition was formed to keep Protestantism in check. This panel was able to exile and murder people. They would seek out heresy and run trials against people who committed the crime.

    St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre

    During the French Wars of the Religion, two children were going to be married to create temporary peace. When they met up, a conspiracy had been formed to kill the Huguenot. The King agreed to this and let this massacre take place where peace was supposed to take place.
  • How can the Reformation and the Age of Discovery be seen as extensions of the Renaissance?

    The Renaissance was all about thinking outside of the expected and expressing yourself. The Reformation is the perfect example of people doing the unexpected and going after their hearts. People like Luther were willing to give up the church and all of their past beliefs to think for themselves and form their own opinions. The Age of Discovery was all about opening European minds to a whole new place with different things than theirs and whole new civilization.
