    After years of conflict with the Bulgarians, Byzantine Emperor Basil II defeats them. He orders that ninetynine of every one hundred men be blinded and the last man allowed to keep just one eye so he can lead the others home. Bulgaria's Czar Samuel dies of a heart attack when he sees his men, and Basil earns the nickname Bulgar-Slayer. this made him even more powerful because he was now feared by his enemies and he took out his great adversaries to his thrown.

    Having conquered most of Central Europe, Otto the Great is crowned emperor in Rome, reviving Charlemagne's title. From this point on, most German kings are also crowned ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. this is significant because now most germans are now going to be crowned holy roman emperor and this made the kings more powerful because they are backed now by the germans

    In the Treaty of Verdun, Louis the Pious divides the Carolingian Empire among his three sons. These three parts come to be known as the West Frankish Empire, consisting chiefly of modern France; the "Middle Kingdom," a strip running from what is now the Netherlands all the way down to Italy; and the East Frankish Empire, or modern Germany. this shows the power of the king that he can divide power between his sons and this makes the new kings leading over there kingdom more powerful.

    During the Middle Ages, these monarchs became increasingly powerful as their territories became bigger. They derived their power through the ownership of land and their authority came from God, not the people. This was called the 'divine right of kings'. so feudalism directly made the kings more powerful.

This marks the beginning of the political alliance later to take shape under Otto the Great as the Holy Roman Empire. this makes the pope and the kings more powerful because now he declared Charlemagne ruler of all romans which makes Charlemagne even more powerful and it shows the popes power because he has the ability to do this.

It is partly in reaction to Irene that the pope later crowns Charlemagne emperor of Western Europe. this makes the pope very powerful because he is the one to declare each of them rulers and that is done by him just acknowledging them the ruler. this makes the kings and queens more powerful because they now are backed by the pope.

    The Carolingian Age begins when Charles Martel's son Pepin III, with the support of the pope, removes the last Merovingian king from power.this is a event that in the future made the pope more powerful because he now is someone who gives support to kings and groups of people now if the pope supports you this makes your actions justified and that gives the pope more powerful to make commands.

    Reign of Charlemagne, greatest ruler of Western Europe during the Early Middle Ages, begins.this made kings very powerful after Charlemagne because he was such a good leader and so powerful it gave future kings a lot of power because of his dominance Charlemagne was a strong leader and good administrator. As he took over territories he would allow Frankish nobles to rule them. However, he would also allow the local cultures and laws to remain. He had the laws written down and recorded.
