Following this troublesome period of indifference by Israel toward their agreement with God and His laws... the Israelites decided that they didn't want an "invisible" God to rule them, and petitioned to have a "man" rule them. A "king" whom they could see, like all the other nations around them had. God allowed Israel's petition, and the kings of Israel and Judah [some faithful to God laws, some not] began their rule over the tribes of Israel.
