The Teaching Career of Tom Parslow

  • My First Computer Class

    My First Computer Class
My junior year at Charter Oak High School, I took my first computer class in which I learned working with DOS, WordPerfect, Lotus 123, and DBase (which today would translate to MS Word, Excel, and Access)

    Chatting with someone....online????
Yeah this was the year I started chatting on AOL. I just remember the dialup service and when someone would make a phone call to the house, it would disrupt our line and I would lose my chat. Ohhhh how many times I got upset when that happened!

    So This Is PowerPoint....
I remember my last year at Cal State Fullerton learning this new program on presenting your ideas called PowerPoint. No more presenting on posterboards or getting messy with glue and markers. Now I could present my ideas, pictures, charts, etc. in an electronic format. The presentation was in my Management class in which we presented about Airbus (the company that builds planes). The one big thing I remember is using a zip drive to transfer our presentation to another computer. Wow....

    Finally....A College Graduate!
What a day! Six years of hard work finally paying off with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (Accounting).

  • Began Teaching at Arroyo HS

    Began Teaching at Arroyo HS
I have to admit I got lucky! Where most people going through their teaching credential have to do their student teaching for free, I was able to get a internship at Arroyo HS in El Monte. They started the school year two months in without a business teacher. So I came in at the right time.
  • Learning Graphic & Web Design

    Learning Graphic & Web Design
Part of me accepting the job at Arroyo HS was promising to learn the programs they teach. I had to learn Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and GoLive all in one school year! I had a lot of late nights learning the lessons and staying one step ahead of the students. But it truly did change my life as to this day, I continue to teach these courses in our COHS Business Academy.

My new teaching home at COHS
After two great years of getting use to my new career in teaching graphics and web design, Charter Oak High School (my alma mater) had an opening in which I jumped right on it. As soon as I got there, we formed the COHS Business Academy which prepares students for various business and graphic/web design careers.

Obtained Digital Arts & Design Cert.
While I have spent the past eight years teaching graphics and web design, I had never received any formal training in it (just teaching myself). So when the time came for me to get more units to move over a column in my salary schedule, it just made sense to get units in classes that could help me "fill in the gaps" of subjects I was already teaching. I received my Digital Arts & Design certificate from my 15 units I took this summer at UCR.
  • Learning Google Docs

    Learning Google Docs
I decided to take a class on learning Google Docs through the University of San Diego. Learning the word, spreadsheet, and presentation programs has become an asset in attempting to teach my school to use as well as to teach my students to use in creating their online portfolios.
