King Philip started to rule in 1285. After he had conflict with Pope Boniface he took control of the french bishops.

Directly after Boniface became Pope he disagreed with King Philip.

King Philip controled the bishops which angered Pope Boniface because he thought that Popes should rule all kings like in the past. Pope Boniface wrote an official document telling King Philip to step down and give the pope power over him. Philip decided to disregard this document which began the feud.

The pope was let out of jail but died a month later. As a result never again would a pope have more power than the king.

King Philip held Pope Boniface prisoner and attempted to bring him to trial. He did this to get the monarchy and the pope to obey him.
