    The stock market had been growing and growing during the 1920’s. Then, on Tuesday October 29th, 1929 it crashed, later being referred to as “Black Tuesday”. The cause for the cause of the collapse was for five two reasons, the stocks were over valued because so many people were buying them, and people borrowed money they didn’t have because they thought that they would make money in the stock market to pay it back. This stock market crash was the cause of the dirty thirties and great depression

    The two main people running for this was R.B. Bennett, and Mackenzie King. Bennett’s campaign platform was to combat the great depression. King didn’t mention unemployment in his campaign. R.B. Bennett won with 134 seats (47.7%), Mackenzie King lost with 90 seats (45.5%). This affected Canada because it shows that Canada trusted Bennett to help them out of the depression.

    Opening of Maple Leaf Gardens
    Maple Leaf Gardens is a historic arena in downtown Toronto; it was build for the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team in 1931. The Leafs used this arena from 1931-1999, later moving to the Air Canada Center. In Maple Leaf Gardens the leafs won 11 Stanly Cups from 1932-1967 winning the 2nd most Stanly Cups of anyone in the league. Also the 1st ever, annual All-Star game was held there in 1947.     Dionne Quintuplets
    These twins were the 1st quintuplets born without drugs; they were born May 28th 1934. At birth they weighed less than 2 pounds each. The quintuplets were attracting people from all over the world because it was something positive that happened during the great depression. After just four months with their family they were made a tourist attraction in Ontario for the next 9 years. These quintuplets affected Canada because they were born in Canada so during the depression it gave kind of a spot l

    Battle of Brittian
    This battle took place in 1940, over the English Channel, and the battle was done entirely with planes. In this battle the Germen air force attacked the British air force, Germany wanted to gain control of the English Channel so they could invade Britain. On September 17th the Germans retreated due to losses in their air force. This is significant to Canada because there were many Canadian pilots in this battle, and about a quarter of these pilots lost their lives.

    Battle of Hong Kong
    This battle took place in 1941, just hours after the Pearl Harbor attack. In this battle the Japanese were attacking the British colony of Hong Kong, the battle was in favour of the Japanese a soon as it started because they outnumbered us around 50 000 to 1 500. It took the Japanese from December 8th to 25th to beat us; the fact that it took that long to win shows the brave resistance of Canadian troops.
  • Battle of Dieppe

    Battle of Dieppe
    This battle took place August 19th 1942. This battle was a test for a full attack on Western Europe; the raid gave the Allies a chance to test out the strategies they would use for the later attack. The attack on Dieppe was a disaster for the allies; around half the men sent in were either taken prisoner or killed. This battle taught the allies how to do a better attack for Western Europe. This battle was significant for Canada because 5000/6000 soldiers were Canadian.

    This battle took place June 6th 1944. This battle was fought off the coast of Normandy in France, over 150 000 allied soldiers were in this battle. The battle of Dieppe was a test run for this battle and one of the reasons they were so successful. Over 1000 Canadian soldiers fought in this battle, and it is considered the turning point of the war.

    Atomic Bombs
    Over 200 000 were killed in the bombing of Hiroshima/Nagasaki. The bombs were dropped by the United States in 1945, in hopes to end the war. After the 2nd bomb was dropped the Japanese finally surrendered. These bombs are still the only use of nuclear weapons to this date. This is significant to Canada because this is what finally ended the war and got all countries out of battle with each other.
