I had selective mutism when I was younger. I did not talk to anyone that did no live in my house. I decided one day to whisper to my favorite teacher on her last day that it was my moms birthday.

I struggled to learn to read. I remember working with my mom who had difficulty teaching me ( she was dyslexic). So Instead I worked with my grandmother. She taught me the basics to sound out words enough to make guess on the word i was trying to read.

In 2nd grade a teacher I was working with told me that i was being lazy and that i would go nowhere while i was struggling to complete a reading assessment.

I remember being brought to an office and being told by my mother that i was going to take a test and to answer the questions being asked, read what they ask. To do what i know and what first comes to my mind and not try for perfection

I was told that I had dyslexia and that i would receive services and be put in classes to help support my reading skills. I do not remember any of the classes or programs I started in helping me. I remember being frustrated because i was struggling more in the programs and hated reading more than I did before. I also remember the adults around me being frustrated with the school I was in. ( i know know the school was making it difficult for me to receive the services).

In 3rd Grade we where asked to read a biography celebrity and dress up and present a report. I choose Serena Williams. The adults in my life prepared me, helped me read the biography and create and practice giving my oral presentation. I felt well prepared for the presentation but as soon as i began to present I passed out due to the anxiety of reading out loud and the fear of not being able to read a word in front of my peers.

My Third Grade teacher Mr. Wagner introduced me Books on tape. My school held and event to go see the first harry potter movie. I feel in love with the movie but remember my class talking about the book. I had attempt to read it on my own but felt defeated. One day my teacher put a the audio of Harry potter for a class reward. I listening to audio helps my understanding of text and following along in the text as well as help improve my fluency

I was able to attend my first IEP meeting about the services I received. I was able to express what worked, what didn't, what I thought might help me.- The end result was going from c's and D;s to Strait A's in the rest of my high school classes.

When my son started learning to read i found it difficult to help and support what he was doing in school i had to unlearn all the bad habits I had learned when I Learned how to read. Learning new techniques help develop my current literacy abilities

Going back to school after taking a long break and raking my first class. I realized what worked when i was younger no longer applied. I had to go back and figure out what works best for me when it comes to reading and writing papers
