Personal Literacy Timeline

  • My Parents

The first book I remember my parents reading to me was Pat the Bunny. I loved getting to interact with the pages. My parents always stressed how important reading was a child.
  • Summi and Pop

My farther's parents are big readers. My grandmother still reads huge mystery novels and my grandfather can still be caught reading the paper every day. Every Sunday my grandmother would read the Sunday Comics to me and my brothers. She read us Fairy tales and Treasure Island when we would spend the night during the week.
  • Library Cards

This summer my grandmother took my brothers and myself to the get our first library cards. She would take us to the library to read and check out book every week.
  • It's "About" to get Worse

Second grade was a tough year. This was the year that I started noticing children being pulled out special programs. My friends where being pulled out for Gifted and Talented and I was not. It made me very sad and left out. One day, I was asked to spell the word "about"j on the board. I started writng abuot. I knew it was wrong, but I could not figure out how to spell the word. After that I was pulled out for dyslexia testing. I qualified.

    UIL and Pull Outs

While in third grade I was pulled out almost daily for CEI or Dyselxia services. I did not let my disability get in my way. I still participated in UIL's Oral Reading.
