    British defeated at Toulon
    This was Napoleons first victory. It symbolizes Frances rise to power. However, most of the French navy was destroyed in the battle.
  • Meeting of the Estates General

    Meeting of the Estates General
    A meeting of the assembly that represented the french estates called together by Louis XVI. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the current financial crisis the french government was in.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    Storming of the Bastille
    The storming of the Bastile was an uprising of peasents in Paris. On the day of an extravagent dinner part at Versailles, they attacked a french prison in the city. This was the first time the underclass had such a direct influence.
  • Women March on Versailles

    Women March on Versailles
    An angry mob of working women stormed the palace because of the bread shortage. They then captured the royal family and brought them to Paris, closing the gap Louis XVI had put between himself and the people.

    The failed attempt of the royal family tp flee Paris led to Louis and Marie Antionette becoming even more hated. Now they were not only hated for their treatement of the people, but as traitors to their country.

    During the Revolution, Louis was incompetent and disliked by the people. He let the country fall into finicial ruins and much more. He was tried for treason, and guilltined.This spread shock through Europe and sparked the revolution.

    The Reign of Terror was run by the Jcobins. It was a mass purge of of all suspected of being against the revolution. 25,000 to 40,000 people were guillotined.

    Robespierre was executed after bringing in a list of his assembly memebers that he considered to be traitors. They then executed him for their own safety.This event was significant because Robespierre had been the head of the Jacobin Reign of Terror. With his death the mass killings began to come to an end.

    France Sells the United States the Louisiana Territory
    This represents one of the many things the French sacrificied in order to help with the American Revolution. It nearly doubled the size of the U.S. and helped it gain an abundant amount of power.

    Napoleon Crowns Himself Emperor
    Napoleon recieved very little resistance when he took over. France had been without a system of government for severeal years and the succesful young general was a promise of order.

    Napoleon Crowned King of Italy
    This made Italy a part of the French empire. Napoleon had a breif reign as Italian president, and was not overly involved. This position did improve the strength of France as a European power.

    This was a congress of European ambassadors held in Vienna. It is here that the national boundaries of Europe are set.

    Battle of Waterloo / Napoleon’s 2nd Abdication and Exile
    When napoleon returned from his first exile, he regained followers and the Hundred Days of Napoleon followed. However, he was defeated at Waterloo in a bloody battle and abdictaed/exiled for the second time. He spent the remainder of his life on the island of Saint Helena.
