  • The Palmer Raids

    In the years following World War I many Americans were afriad of the Russian Revolution. Americans called the communists "reds" becuase of the color of the Russian flag. President Hoover responded to the global fear of communisn caused by the Russian revolution, and authorized General Palmer to raid cites across the nation on unionist and sociaist. General Palmer did not have arrest warrents, but he raided more than 30 cities and sent many to jail and many back to the Soviet Union.

  • First radio station to broadcast a news

    First radio station to broadcast a news
    Detroit station broadcasted what is believed to be the first news report on the air. Detroit radio got their news from Associated Press and also they were the first radio to be owned by a newspaper company. This was a really important event because radios were used for many things, but no one thought until Aug. 31, 1920 to broadcast news. Radios only broadcasted news and advertisements, so this was a new idea that later caught on with other radios.

  • Nazis stage public book burnings in Germany

    On this day in history university students burned over 25,000 books that were "un-German." This included books by Einstein, Jack London, Thomas Mann, and many others. Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels spoke about the German dream and then they sang Nazi songs and anthems. The burning of books had not been seen since the Middle Ages. This event of burning books was one of the first acts of discrimination against Jews, because all books with "Jewish intellect" were burned.

  • Oranienburg Concentration Camp

    Oranienburg Concentration Camp
    Oranienburg Concentration Camp was opened on July 14,1936. It was one of the first concentration camps that the Nazis established after they came to power, and mainly held political enemies of Germany and the " social undesirables". This conncentration camp later was taken over and turned into Sachsenhausen concentration camp which was where more than 30,00 Jews and POWs died. Oranienburg Camp was one of the first camps and then allaround Germany many more were established and thousands died.
  • Japanese-American Citizens are given back citizenship

    Fifteen years after World War II, the Japanese-American citizens were restored to citizenship. The 4,978 people had renounced their citizenship during World War II. The United States Judicial Department gave them back full citizenship in America. This was a big step towards forgiving and fixing our world after World War II.

  • President signs Civil Rights Act of 1960

    President Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1960. The Civil Rights Act bascially stated that no citizen could obstruct someone's atempt to vote. This act introduced penalties so many people would stop trying to prevent African Americans and Mexicans from voting. He signed this act to eliminate loopholes that people werwe using in the Civil Rights Act of 1957. This was important because it was a law to try to stop the racism that was occuring in the U.S., especially in the South.

  • First soldier awarded Medal of Honor in Vietnam War

    The first Medal of Honor awarded to a soldier in the Vietnam War was gvien to Captain Roger Donlon for his heroic actions in the war. Him and his team were manning Camp Nam Dong, when it was attacked. Captain Donlon was shot in the stomach, but he kept fighting. He was wounded 3 more times during the fight but he kept fighting. In that battle, 2 Amercians died and 7 were wounded, if not for Captain Donlon throwing grenandes and manning a mortar,many more would've died.

  • Five Bosnian Croats were convited for murder of over 100 Muslims

    The United Nations sentence 5 Bosnian Croat militiamen to up to 25 years for the 1993 massacre of more than 100 Muslims in a Bosnian village. The houses of unarmed citizens were set on fire and many Muslims were burned alive. The organized act was seen as persucution and "ethnic cleansing. The court ruled their crime of killing Muslims, burning 169 homes and 2 mosques as a terrorsim act aimed at expelling Muslims from the village. But the men were charged for persecution, not genocide.

    On September 11, 2001 terrorist steered planes into the World Trade Centers in New York and one into the Pentagon, The terrorist hijacked the planes and over 3,000 people were killed. The group that caused this was the Islamic group, Al-Qaeda, and was seen as an act of terrorism. The terrorists were from Saudi Arabia and some from other Arabs nations, it was also reported that Osama Bin Ladin was supporting this act, because of America's support of Israel.

  • United States lifts ban on travel with Lybia

    On February 26, 2004 the United States lifted the ban on travel to Libya. They ended restrictions that had lasted for 23 years. Allowing travel to Libya wil greatly help our companies because now we can trade for Libya's rich oil. The United States have been working on improving their relations with countries like Libya.

    Nelson Mandela takes action against Aids
    On Nelson Mandela's 86th birthday he asked for the commitment of the world to take action against Aids. He had lead the campaign in raising awareness for Aids, but this really helped make others more aware as he asked the world to see it as a bigger problem. Africa has 25 million of the 38 million people who have it. Mandela even made a Aids foundation callled "46664" which was his cell number.

    My family moved to Wisconsin from California.
  • First forced evacuation in Israel

    The first forced evacuation of settlers in Israel as a part of Israel's disengagement plan was on August 17, 2005. Almost 15,000 Israeli soldiers and police were getting ready to forcibly evacuate settlers. They were evacuating from the Gaza Strip is a result of the violent resistence to Israeli occupation. The people were given the choice to leave peacefully, but if they didn't they wouldbe forcibly removed. The Israeli government hoped that this would limit the Pakastanian attacks on Israel.

  • California judge overturns law on same sex marriage

    California judge overturns the Proposition 8 law that prohibits same sex marriage. Propostion 8 was passed in 2008 with 52% of the vote. There were huge celebrations outside the court. This was one of the first steps toward the nationally legalizing of gay marriage.

    First Amputee to compete in Olympics
    The first amputee to compete in the Olympics was South African runner, Oscar Pistorius. He advanced to the semi-finals in running the 400 meter dash. He did not make it farther as he took last in his heat in the semifinals. But Oscar Pistorius still inspired people all over the world.

    Queen Elizabeth II has the longest reign
    Queen Elizabeth II becomes England's longest reigning monarch at 63 years and 17 months. She beat her great-great-grandmother, who held the previous record. As of today Queen Elizabeth II will be reigning for 23,232 days. Queen Elizabeth II is 89 and has been reigning since she was 26 years old.
