First day of Kindergarten at Neil Campbell School
Neil Campbell SchoolAugust; known at home as Katrucia and speaking mostly Ukrainian, Mrs. Smith's Kindergarten class at Neil Campbell School begins. Attended until Grade 3. It was recommended to move me up a grade when I was in Grade 2, but my parents recognized that my math skills were weak and declined. Good move! My Math skills remain at about a grade 4 level!
  • Donwood Elementary School

Donwood Elementary SchoolGrades 4-6. My singing got me a lead role in the school musical. I vividly recall reading "Where the Redfern Grows" with Ms Grevstad in grade 5 and both of us crying as we read the final chapter. The rest of the class was baffled by our reaction. Years later, she was a sub in a school where I was working and we both had to laugh at the whole situation!
  • John Pritchard School

Grades 7-9. I landed the lead roles in two musicals, until my voice changed! I won six awards for community service and academics in Grade 9. I felt like I was at the top of my game. Did I peak too early?

  • I met the Man of my Dreams!

Walked into Creative Writing class at UW with a friend. Heads together chatting as the Prof drones on. My head snaps up when I hear HIS voice cut through the monotony! But the room is over crowded and I can't see HIS face- but my friend can. It's all I can talk about when we exit the room, but she is mute letting me talk and talk until we reach a crosswalk and as the light changes she loudly announces that HE's right behind me!

    Engaged!
You know that thing that folks do when they wrap a tiny box in successive bigger boxes like Matryshka dolls? That was how I received my engagement ring on Christmas morning! Does that mean I'm engaged to Santa? Would be funny if, 27 years later, it wasn't so true on many levels!
  • Married!

    Married!
Married my amazing singer-songwriter musician husband Brian in a packed church on a Sunday afternoon. Reception at a lovely golf course outside of the city. We drove my grandparents to their home, parked their car and walked to our home, in full wedding regalia in the moonlight. Epic!

Most of us had families and we made sure to celebrate all of the special moments as 'one big family.' I graduated on the Dean's Honor Roll (WC edition), with a 4.1 GPA. Twice as good as when I went to UW with no distractions in the '80's!

  • Cancer #2

So a teacher goes in to her local Emergency room in the wee hours every 2 months or so because she doesn't want to miss school, but believes she has strep throat symptoms (she usually gets antibiotics). After her fourth visit, a new ER doctor asks her to see her family physician, who asks her to see a particular doctor nearby. Yes, the teacher is me and it's cancer AGAIN; CLL or Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. I have the disease of a 72 year old white European male. Huh. We choose the watch and wa

    Casey Graduates High School!
Casey graduates high school. The theme is 007. He rebels against the Grad Committee edict that all men should be in tuxedos by sewing his own parachute pants, wearing my husbands tuxedo tails jacket, a band t-shirt, a porkpie hat and John Lennon mirrored sunglasses. He had the most photos taken of him at grad!
  • 6 months of Chemotherapy!

    6 months of Chemotherapy!
CLLChemo is not bad. Good actually. I only lose about 2/3 of my hair. I discover a host of new allergies and develop shingles. I don't lose or gain weight (I was kind of banking on the lose). I bruise like a peach. The only real drawback is that once my immune system is wiped out, it does not recover. At all. Ever.

  • Joseph Teres School

Joseph Teres SchoolSo a teacher goes into a school for a 0.5, 3 month term TL job interview that she is totally unqualified for, except that she is a teacher and the job is so time limited. Teacher is offered the job on the telephone on the last day of school and asks the principal if she is sure. Teacher gets the job, only three people (no administration) know that she is Cancer Girl (three saw her port scar, asked, and were told the truth). So far, so good. The three month term is extended for the whole year. Wh
  • University of Alberta Distance Learning Teacher Librarianship Course Begins!

My first graduate level course. The learning curve is steep. The idea that my brain can cope with this is singularly satisfying, even if my body rebels with fatigue from new allergies and the reappearance of shingles.

  • I Love to Read at Joseph Teres School

Bedtime Stories with TazOur theme was Readers are Eaters! I invited over 20 guest readers to read to different grades throughout the months; guests included Lt.Gov. Philip Lee, local tv and radio personalities, and various foodbanks. We were written about directly in the Winnipeg Free Press once, then indirectly 3 more times. Big Daddy Taz, a local comedian, could not make it so he came in June to read bed time stories. We served milk/juice and cookies and kids came in their PJs with their parents in the evening.

    Original song unveiled! Term Renewed!
My talented husband and I wrote an original song about the 7 Sacred Teachings, with the help of all of the students in the school. The song was performed in our outdoor classroom in the presence of an Elder, who smudged and blessed the space. Teaching term is renewed for a whole year at half time. Coincidence? Either way- Joy!
