My educational journey

  • Starting School

August 1999 I started Pre-K and I was super scared!
  • Decision to become a teacher

In first grade, I already knew what I wanted to be. I loved explaining information to my peers. I told everyone since this day, I wanted to be a teacher!
  • TAKS Testing

Third grade, we began state testing. For me, I did not stress over it because it was just another challenge we faced. However, many of my classmates did not think the way I did. Test anxiety is very real and many students suffer from it, therefore impacting their scores.
  • New beginnings

Starting middle school was stressful because of all the new people I would encounter. I did not want to start school because I developed social anxiety. Social anxiety is where someone fears being introduced to new people or a new setting that is different than what they are used to.
  • Turn of events

I had a few unfortunate events my sixth grade year, that caused me to be physically immobile. With the loss of mobility, I became depressed. Depression is common in teenagers, one in three have been diagnosed with chronic depression. Many students have to learn to handle their depression by therapy, or medication.
  • Application time

Being in advanced placement classes in middle school, I decided to sign up for the Early College program. I applied and went through three different interviews. After months of waiting, I finally got in!
  • Decisions that changed my life

Summer program at Transmountain Early College High School was one of the best memories in school. I overcame my social anxiety because I was placed with like minded people who had a goal, to obtain their associates before they graduate high school. The program was goal oriented and challenging, something I needed.
  • First Actual College Class

The first college class I took physically at EPCC was Acting I and II. This was during the summer, but it was the most fun I have had in a long time. The professor helped with public speaking skills with the vocal training we had to complete each day before class. With that, we learned how to project our voices without screaming, something useful for teaching.
  • Proformance day

The day we had to put on a play that we rehearsed a full semester was one of the most exciting, nerve racking things I have ever done. Not only did it force me to be center of attention due to being the lead, but I had to perform to people I could not see. This helps me in teaching because sometimes we do not know what the students will understand. Therefore, this helps me learn to look for expressions that are sometimes not there. Listen to the surrounding sounds to gage a reaction.
  • Graduation Days

Graduating from EPCC before graduating high school was one of the most backwards things I've ever done. Being with thousands of people who are all older than you is scary. Graduating with my high school class was different because we only graduated with 86, verses the 1,000+. Both graduation days hold a special memory because I finally did it, I graduated college before I graduated high school.
  • Venturing out

Many students choose to go to a different city or even state for college. I was one of them. I choose to study at Grand Canyon University. Living in a dorm room with five other girls gave me a new sense of stress that I have never felt before. All the emotions that happened on a daily basis was something I was not used to. I was raised in a house filled with males, therefore I never dealt with drama. This caused me to leave the university. I couldn't handle so many females in one room.
  • Packing up and moving home

The hardest decision I ever made was to come back home and attend UTEP. I wanted to be independent and away from my home town. UTEP fortunately accepted all of my credits, where as GCU did not accept half of them.
  • My Next Graduation Date

December 2018... Finally I will be able to say " I graduated with my Masters in Education from UTEP"... UTEP taught me to appreciate where you come from and the journey you take. Sometimes plans change and that's okay. Make the best of life.
