Songhai gained it's wealth from a very powerful ruler by the name of Sunni Ali.

After Sunni Ali died, his son, Sunni Baru, took over as king.

By late 1500, much of Mali was gone due to foreign attackers. Mali's army wasn't able to sustain themselves.
