Name comes from the Arabic word hamada. Son of Abd Allah bin Al-Muttalib and Amina bint Wahb. Dad died before born. Raised by mother, but then intrusted at early age to wet nurse Halima. Grew up in hill country learning Arabic.

Went because Yathrib was going through tough times and they heard of Muhammad as being wise so they wanted him to be their meditator. Yathrib was then known as the City of the Prophet. Muhhamad stayed there building first Muslim community. He brought more people to his side.
