Maximilien Robespierre

  • Republic of Virtue

Robespierre and his supporters built a republic of virtue. This wiped out France's past. They changed the calendar to have 12 months in one year and 30 days in each renamed month. There were no Sundays because the radicals considered religion to be dangerous. They even closed all churches in Paris.
  • Reign of Terror

Robespierre became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He governed France as a dictator and the period of his rule became known as the Reign of Terror. The committee's chief task was to protect the Revolution from its enemies. The enemies were tried in the morning and guillotined in the afternoon. He justified the terror by saying it enabled French citizens to remain true to the ideals of the Revolution
  • End of the Terror

Some members of the National Convention turned on Robespierre because they feared for their own safety. They demanded he to be arrested and executed. He was sent to the guillotine and the terror had stopped.
