Lee, Hyunju. Developmental Psychology Timeline

  • Birth

    Birth
I was born as an average baby girl - no peculiar teratogens seem to have got through the placenta in the fetus - with all inborn reflexes such as rooting reflex, sucking reflex, grasping reflex and babinski reflex. In a few months following the birth, I enter the Oral Stage when I gain sensual pleasure purely from my mouth.
  • Period: to

    Sensorimotor Stage

I experience the world strictly through my senses and inborn reflexes. I develop object permanence, understanding that objects exist even if they are out of my sensory region.
  • Period: to

    Trust vs Mistrust

During this period, I encounter the society for the first time - my family - and learn to trust my parents based on their actions and providance of food and affection.
  • Start to develop the first schemata

Start to develop the first schemata
Around this time I begin to develop my own thoughts and ideas about the world but I cannot recall what they were due to infantile amnesia.
  • Period: to

    Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt

During this period, I tried to gain control over my own body by trying to walk and eat alone. My mother said that I didn't say "No" as much as an average child would do and that I would mostly follow everyone's words.
  • First Walk

    First Walk
During 12~16 months period, I started walking and doing toilet training (anal stage). My parents say that like most toddlers,I had secure attachments in which I liked to be with my parents and was under extreme stress in their absence.
  • Period: to

    Preoperational Stage

During this period I begin to talk and use language to describe and represent the surroundings. Also, I begin to move away from egocentrism and work my way into empathy.
  • Period: to

    Initiative vs Guilt

In this stage, babies ask a lot of question to understand the world around them. My mother said that I was more of a quite child, not asking many questions. She thinks that it was probably because I started talking later than an average baby and so I had already observed and understood the surroundings using senses.
  • Starts talking

    Starts talking
I started talking pretty late as a baby. During this period I asked a lot of questions to understand the world and learning to use the language to represent my thoughts and ideas.
  • Birth of younger sister

Also enter or near to the midst of the preconventional level in moral development - I make my decisions on whether I will be punished or not. According to my mother, I took great care to my younger sister and showed almost no hostility towards her. Therefore, I think that my egocentrism dissolved with the birth of my younger sister.
  • Starts attending kindergarten

By starting to attend kindergarten, I experience being out in the society for the first time. Through this procedure, I go through accomodation, changing and adapting our schemata, and identity, developing my own characteristics that differentiates me from other kids.
  • First Surgery

During one of the break times in kindergarten, I was playing with my friend. Then I tripped myself (by accident or someone pushed me - I can't recall it clearly) and cut my chin. I was sent immediately to the hospital to get stitches, which I remember very vividly.
  • Period: to

    Industry vs Inferiority

From the moment I receive formal education (kindergarten) untill possibly I die, I would experience competitiveness, industry and inferiority. Every action and work I do are evaluated in the society and are compared with those of the others which sometimes results in anger, depression, inferioirty complex, etc.
  • Period: to

    Concrete Operational Stage

I become to think more logically and develop the idea of concepts of conservation, in which I understand that objects' characteristics do not change even if their shape, place or number are altered.
  • Elementary School

At this age I attend elementary school and meet a variety of new people. By this time, I go deeper into establishing my identity and who I am as well as developing my productivity and competitiveness.
  • Period: to

    Identity vs Role Confusion

I think once I started attending elementary school, the question of identity and 'Who am I?' rose up inside me because school is probably the first large-scale society children will experience as it is an institution with diverse people. To identify myself, I would continue to make new friends or take part in school activities and this stage would probably go on until after I graduate from university.
  • Death of Uncle

Hearing death of my father's oldest brother and experiencing the funeral for the first time sort of pushed me into the conventional level of moral development as I had to learn to behave myself and think/act for others - end of the egocentric thoughts.
  • Moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Moving to Jeddah was the most influential event in my life. The lifestyle completely changed and so did my mindset. My parents were authoritative, so they let me do things such as meeting friends and going out to explore freely yet under circumstances so I could get adapted to this country more quickly.
  • Joined American International School of Jeddah

  • First Overseas Trip - to Jordan

This was my first trip to any other country than Korea and Saudi Arabia. This trip was sort of a starter for all the other trips and opened myself to other schemata and a new world.
  • Elementary School Graduation

  • Period: to

    Formal Operational Stage

By this stage, I have developed abstract reasoning like hypothesis testing in which I can manipulate objects and ideas in my mind without seeing real objects. Also, I realize and understand how I think, also known as megacognition.
  • Start of Puberty

Start to develop secondary sex characteristics such as development of breasts and body curves as well as growth in height and weight; growth earlier and faster than boys of the same age. Gradually enter the genital stage of Freud's four psychosexual stages in which I am fixated for the rest of my life, which is a developmental norm.
  • First MUN trip to Singapore

  • Death of Grandfather

  • Middle School Graduation

I think I entered Postconventional level of moral development around this time as now I begin to think critically and examine the aspects of life to start to establish generativity, creating the ideal life for myself and others.
  • Menache

  • Period: to

    Intimacy vs Isolation

During this stage I would recognize the balance between work and social relationship and strive to sustain the balance. I get into despair because I can't really figure out how to spend my time wisely - how to divide my time in to time spent with friends, family or completely by myself.
  • First Theatrical Experience

My first play leads me to continue on this experience because I meet so many new people and enjoy interacting with them as well as becoming someone else like MAGIC.
  • Period: to

    Generativity vs Stagnation

During this period, I start to plan my future - university and life in a bigger society. This would continue on forever because making critical decisions to make my life interesting and ensuring that those decisions go as i plan will never cease.
  • High School Graduation

  • Period: to

    Integrity vs Despair

During this last stage, I would look back on some influential decisions or my life in general such as the university I've chosen, the person I chose to marry, etc. and decide whether my life was satisfactory or not. Towards the end of my life, I plan to travel alone to the places that hold my childhood memories and such to help the process of integrity. I think I would be satisfied with my life.
