Key Events Leading to War 1812

  • Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality

    Washington issued this to stay neutral between conflicts happening with France and Great Britain. This was done to avoid being brought into conflict, and if America were to side with one nation, the other nation in the conflict would turn against America.
  • Jay Treaty

    This was a treaty that took place to resolve issues that were remaining with Britain since American independence. Under terms of this treaty, the British agreed to remove royal troops from western frontiers and establish commission for the debt of the U.S.
  • Washington's Farewell Address

    This was the farewell given by Washington after serving the public and being President for so long. In this address he gave warnings to the future government and they impacted decisions that America made.
  • Embargo Act of 1807

    This was passed and signed by President Jefferson to prohibit trade outside of the U.S. as a way to show independence on American goods and neutrality. This had a terrible impact on Americans, impacting America's economy more than any other nation that it was aimed for.
  • Impressment of Sailors

    Men were forced to go into service of the Royal Navy. American sailors that were stopped by the press gangs were sometimes pressed if they could not prove their citizenship. This was one of the causes of War of 1812 because the British were not respecting American rights.
  • Tecumseh (1)

    This was an Indian chief that allied with Great Britain against the Americans in the War of 1812.
  • The War of 1812 Begins

    After the war was declared, American forces invaded Canada, but they were unsuccessful. British troops burned the White House and the Capitol along with other government buildings in Canada by the American troops. There was a naval victory that forced the British to retreat back to Canada. In 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed to end the War of 1812.
  • Warhawks

    These were people that were in support of going to war with Great Britain. They wanted to stop the British influence among Natives, invade Canada and gain more land, and to give speeches urging Americans to stand up to Great Britain.

    He died in the Battle of the Thames in 1813, and the alliance with the British collapsed after his death.
  • Hartford Convention

    This was a secret meeting of Federalist delegated to discuss grievances because of President James Madison when it came to the War of 1812 and mercantile policies.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    This was the treaty that formally ended the War of 1812 with peace between the U.S. and Great Britain and established commission of the boundary between the U.S. and Canada.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    This battle took place after the British tried to sneakily seize New Orleans to expand their territory. The British were defeated by the Americans as everyone was told to do whatever they had to do to protect their city. Because Andrew Jackson helped to defeat the British in this battle, it gave him more support when he ran for President in 1828.
