    In 1947, Great Britain decided they could no longer handle their obligations to both the Arabs and the Jews, so they asked the United Nations to handle the problem. The United Nations created a special committee to propose ideas for the how to deal with the problem in Palestine.

    United Nations Splits Palestine Into Separate Arab And Jewish States
    In November of 1947, the United Nations voted 33-10 to partition Palestine into two separate states, one Jewish and one Arab, whilst leaving the city of Jerusalem under United Nations control.
  • First Arab-Israeli War Begins

    The day after Israel declared independence, five Arab nations attacked Israeli territory, first with an air attack on Tel Aviv, and then an invasion. By the end of the war, Israel not only still had all their territory, but they had also captured part of the land designated by the UN for Palestine. The remainder of area given to the Palestinians was taken by other countries; Egypt got the Gaza Strip and Jordan took the West Bank.

    On the 5th of May 1948, President Truman formally recognised that that the provisional government of Israel was in charge.

    The Six-Day War
    Israel launched a preemptive strike at the Egyptian and Syrian Air Forces in response to what looked like the mobilisation of the surrounding Arab nations' armies. By the end of the six days, Israel had taken the Gaza Strip from Egypt and the West Bank from Jordan.

    At a summit held in Khartoum, Sudan, the Arab leaders declared that they would give Israel three noes: No recognition, no negotiation and no peace.

    On May 9th, 1972, 8 Palestinian members of the Black September group killed two Israeli athletes and took 9 more hostage before killing them also, at the Olympic village in Munich.

    The First Intifada

    The First Intifada was a period of time consisting of riots, violence and strikes by the Palestinians, as well as severe retaliation by the Israel Defence Force. The United Nations condemned Israel for the large number of Palestinian deaths. The First Intifada also paved the way to negotiations between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

    Oslo Peace Accord Is Signed
    In 1993 the Oslo Peace Accord was signed. It detailed how the PLO recognised Israel and condemned violence, and how Israel recognised the PLO as the voice of the Palestinians and as a negotiating partner.

    Yitzhak Rabin, The Prime Minister of Israel, was assassinated as he was leaving a rally in Tel Aviv. He was killed by Yigal Amir, who disliked Rabin's goal of peace with the Palestinians

    Second Intifada

    The Second Intifada was different than the first, characterised by more extreme levels of violence. Palestinian teens threw rocks and Palestinian police had weapons. The Israelis sent tear gas and shot rubber bullets, sometimes even live bullets. The were backed up by helicopter gunships and tanks. As a result of this, the Israelis began construction on their separation wall.

    Construction Of Separation Wall Begins
    In 2002 Israel began building what is now known as the separation wall, which goes along the border of the west bank, however at some points has been built encroaching onto the West Bank's territory, claiming almost 10% more land and cutting off some 25,000 Palestinians from the rest of the West Bank.
