Inca Empire Timeline

  • Period: 1425 to 1532

    The Incas Flourish

    The Inca Empire grows and flourishes in South America. They grow to a population of 12 million people, they adapt to their environment by building roads and using the terrace farming method. They also expand their empire to Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and into southern Colombia.
  • 1438

    The Beginning

    The Inca migrate to the Cuzco Valley and establish their capital at Cuzco. They are led by Manco Capac, the founder and first governor of the Inca civilization. They begin to build and develop their civilization, which will thrive for many years.
  • Period: 1438 to 1471

    A New Leader

    Pachacuti takes over as the leader of the Inca Empire. During his reign, he was able to defeat the Chancas, expand their empire, and found Machu Picchu.
  • Period: 1526 to 1532

    Civil War

    A new leader, Huayna Capac, reigns as Inca leader. He builds many fortresses, religious temples and roads throughout the empire. Then, civil war between the Inca leaders Waskar and Atahualpa, and Atahualpa wins. This is the greatest size their empire will reach.
  • 1533

    The End of the Incas

    In 1532, Pizarro and the Spanish arrive in South America. Later on, the Battle of Cajamarca is held, where the Inca leader Atahualpa is captured and held captive by the Spanish. Eventually, he is excecuted. In 1533, Pizarro takes over Cuzco, ending the Inca Empire. He then founds Lima as the capital of Spanish Peru.
