Immigration and Westward Expansion

  • Arrival to America

Hello my name is Klaus Bayer. I lived in Radegast, Germany but I was very poor because i was unsuccessful at farming. I have come to America to start a new life. I have seen many fliers that have said that America has lots of free land and I would like to farm there. I have also seen and heard that there are many jobs.
  • Discriminated

I saw a "need help" sign so I applied for the job but was denied because I came from Germany. I came here with no money so I have to find a job fast so I do not have to live on the streets during the winter.
  • Another job

I am still homless and the winter is already here. I have found a job at the steel factory but it is very dangerous and the amount of money I get paid is unreasonably low. I must get to the land I so much desire.
  • Rooms for rent

I saw a room that was for rent and now I have just enough to get it. Luckily the winter has been kind to me so far. The house is crowded and the rooms are small but it is better than staying outside.
  • Homestead Act

I have just seen on the newspaper that the Homestead act has been passed. Finally, this is my chance to get the land I so much desire! I must apply and run for my land. I want to move to the West for here i am discriminated because of where I came from, they pay me very little for the hard and dangerous work I do, and I want to do what I have always wanted to do, which is farming.
  • Native Americans Attack

It has been three years since i got my land. I had seen some articles about Native Americans being in the area, but my family and I believed that we were safe. Then when we least expected it they attacked us. They destroyed my farm and took my food.
