Immigrant A, Desmond Gallagher

  • My Birthday

    My Birthday
This is the day I was born. I was born in South Munster, Ireland and named Desmond Gallagher. My name meaning "Foreign Helper from South Munster." As I grew up many of the people living around me moved to America. Many of the people moved away because of the famine. I too moved away when I was older after my parents died. I was hoping to find a job and some food in the United States. But I am writing this to show what acctualy happened.
  • Ellis Island

    Ellis Island
When I arrived in America it was a beutiful sight seeing the great Statue of Liberty towering over the ocean. It was silent as the immigrants stared at it until we reached Ellis Island. It took a few hours and some pushing and shoving through the crowd. But I eventualy got to the medical exam and easily passed. I escaped the crowded island and borded another boat. This one took me to the shores of America. I was finally in this great country.
  • Getting Started

    Getting Started
I got in contact with a man who found me a place to live and a job. The house was small and in a dirty and crowded area of the city. But the job as a construction worker paid pretty good. I didn't bother to meet the neighbors, mainly because there were hundreds of them. But they also didn't seem like very kind people. They seemed so sad with their lives here and I couldn't blame them. America wasn't really what I originaly thought it would be. But it was still better than starving to death.
  • Riots

    Riots
There was s horrible sight was awaiting my return from work. People running and shouting through the streets. And police officers trying to calm the crowd. I managed to sneek through an alley to my house. I noticed that my front door had been smashed open so i proceded cautiously. But as I walked through the opening a man ran out and shoved me to the floor in the process. I found the house wrecked but and a few items gone, but he didn't find my money hidden in the floor.
  • Accident

    Accident
The American workers at the job site had not been too nice to us immigrants lately. They seemed to want to do anything to get rid of us. And this was the day they got their chance. Me and another man were working together near the top, when the other man slipped and fell to his death. I was in shock as everyone stared at the body on the gorund. The men blamed me for causing this and proceded to beat me and call the police. I ran, fleeing the city in fear.
  • Prison

    Prison
Eventually they caught me and I went to court. The lawyer tried to defend me but with so many witnesses claiming I did it, it didn't go so well. Now I reside in a prison cell for the rest of my life. The lawyer was able to keep me from the death penalty. But he was unable to prove me innocent. To be honest the prison wasn't much better than the slums where I lived before. But I know I am no longer free. I am in prison but at least I haven't died long ago in Ireland.
