  • Estates General is Called

    Delegates from the three Estates are called to discuss financial matters. Since Louis XVI almost threw the country into bankrupcy, he could only borrow money or raise taxes by calling a meeting of the Estates General.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    A pledge signed by 56/577 members from the 3rd estate who were locked out of a meeting of the Estates-General on 20 June 1789.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

    The refusal of Kind Louis XVI to approve the declaration helped to bring about increased revolutionary activity in October of 1789. This document was highly influenced by the USA's Declaration of Independance and the circumstances of the revolutions.
  • Reign of Terror (start)

    The revolutionary government starts its revolution. They caused the killing of thousands of people in a wave of executions intended to defend the revolution.
  • Civil Constitution of the Clergy

    This document called for the election of priests and bishops by the voters of the country, and closed the Church's monasteries and convents around France. Alo, allowed the French government to seize property from the Catholic Church.
  • Trial of Louis XVI

    He was tried and convicted of treason. Guillotined on this date.
  • 9th of Thermidor

    Robespierre's enemies attacked him as a tyrant. His was executed the very next day. His execution marked the end of the Reign of Terror.
