    King Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates-General in Versailles to discuss/approve new taxes.

    National Assembly declared
    The Third Estate was locked out of the meetings of the Estates-General so they declared themselves the National Assembly and made the Tennis Court Oath.

    Tennis Court Oath
    The Third Estate, or the National Assembly, pledged to have continuous meetings until a new constitution had been written. 577 men signed the Tennis Court Oath. This was a signifacnt event that is considered the start of the French Revolution.

    Paris women invade Versailles
    A mob of Parisian women marche to Versailles and confronte the King about the high price and lack of bread. They force the royal family back to Paris where they are held as Prisoners. This is an example of the monarchy losing power and the people taking control.

    The Civil Constituiton of the Clergy was a law that stated that the Roman Catholic Church in France was ruled by the French government. King Louis XVI eventually accepted this law.

    Flight to Varennes
    The royal family, including King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette, attempted to flee Paris in order to stop the revolution. They were attempting to escape to Austria, from where Marie Antoinette originates.

    Royal family arrested
    After attempting to flee France, Louis XVI and his family were caught and arrested in Varennes. King Louis XVI's attempt to escape was considered treason and was a turning point in the revolution. The French monarchy was losing power and control.

    The National Convention comprised the constitutional and legislative assembly of France. The National Convention held a lot of power during the beginnign of the French Republic. Important members of the National Convention were Maximilien Robespierre and Georges Danton.

    Louis XVI is tried for treason and is found giulty.
  • Louis XVI is sentenced to death

    Louis XVI is sentenced to death
    Louis XVI is sentenced to the guillotine and is beheaded.

    The Committee of Public Safety was created by the National Convention and formed an executive government during the Reign of Terror. The committe became more powerful as they countered the revolutionary activity within the country.

    Execution of Marie Antionette
    Marie Antionette was also charged with treason and sentenced to the guillotine. She was executed in Public, unlike her husband, and was taken to her execution site in an open cart.

    A new constitution is made my the National Convention. It establishes the directory and remained in effect until the end of the revolution.
