    Call of the Estates Generals
    In 1789, King Louis XVI called an important meeting. He didn't want to make the choice so he called for advice with France's Financial problems. Voting was unfair, with one vote per estate, so the third estate left and created the National assembly.

    After creating the National assembly, Louis XVI locked all members of the third estate out of Versailles. So instead they met at an indoor tennis court. There, they made an oath not to leave until a new constitution was made.

    Storming of the Bastille
    A large prison on the East side of Paris known as the Bastille was attacked by a large, aggresive mob of people. This event was one of the defining moments of the Revolution. After this, most of the surviving attackers gained access to weapons and gunpowder.

    Deceleration of the Rights of Man
    Since the Third Estate was angry at their mistreatment, they decided to create the Declaration of the rights of Man. The National assembly created it with 17 articles listing the official rights of Man. This however did not affect women.
  • March on Versailles

    March on Versailles
    During this time, a large group of women at a marketplace started to revolt due to the enormous price of bread. They ended up marching a whole six hours all the way to the palace of Versailles, gathering more as they went. By the time they got there, thousands of women where gathered. Some even gained entrance to the palace and began fighting. many were killed.

    Civil Constitution of the Clergy
    This was an attempt made by the National assembly to reorganize the Roman Catholic church on a National basis. This abolished the collection of tithes and confiscated some church lands. The clergy were furious and this caused a schism within France that ended on only Napoleon's rule in 1801.

    King Louis XVI and his immediate family tried to flee to Paris to launch a counter-revolution. However they only made it as far as Varennes before they were arrested. This is due to them being spotted in Sainte-Menehould.

    King Louis XVI was arrested once evidence was found of him working with Austria on counterrevolution ideas. He was then sentenced to death. He was executed via guillotine.

    During this period, civil war was spreading, and enemy forces surrounded France. Thousands of people accused of opposing the Revolution where executed because of two opposing political parties, the Jacobins, and the Girondins. Maximilian Robespierre became leader of the Revolution.
  • Execution of Robespierre

    Execution of Robespierre
    Maximilien Robespierre, leader of the Jacobins, is executed and the power of the Jacobins disappears. This marks the end of the reign of terror, as the Girondians gained power.
