  • France's Government sank deeply in debt

    Louis XVI and Marie Antoniette had a deep debt coming from previous kings and their luxurious life.
  • Estates-General Assembly

    It was the first meeting in 175 years, it was an assembly of representatives from all three estates. The assembly met at Versailles.
  • First deliberate act of revolution

    The third estate agreed to Sieyès idea, which was that Third Estate delegates pass laws and reforms in the name of the French people. The Third Estate named themselves National Assembly. In effect of the National Assembly it was the end of absolute monarchy and the beginning of representative government.

    The Third Estate Delegates got locked out of their meeting room. They were able to get into an indoor tennis court. The Delegates pledged to stay inside the tennis court until they had a new constitution

    A mob of people entered the Bastille, a prison in Paris. They killed various guards and walked around the streets showing the heads of the guards

    Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette return to Paris
    Women in Versailles brake into the palace, kill some guards, and order the king and queen to return to Paris. In some hours, the king and queen never saw their palace in versailles ever again. ( There were many taxes in that time and it was really expensive to buy bread. Many peasants were burning documents that legalized the taxations on things. Some peasants even burned manors.)
  • The Old Regime is Dead

    Many noble men gave speeches about their love of freedom and equality. They made this speeches out of fear and not idealism. This meant the old regime was dead.
