    While social inequalities were driving poor people toward revolt new ideas from the Enlightenment were also inspiring the French Revolution.

    By 1787 King Louis XVi was desperate for money. He tried to tax the Second Estate, but the nobles refused to pay. The king, incapable of the strong leadership the situation required, backed down. A year later the country faced bankruptcy.

    At the same time the government was having money issues nature was creating other economic problems as well. First a hailstorm and a drought ruined the harvest. Then the winter of 1788 was the worst in 80 years. Frozen rivers prevented waterwheels from powering the mills that ground wheat into flour. Food and firewood were scarce and expensive and also people were very hungry.

    At the time there were estates. The Frist Estate was made up of Priest and Bishops and the most powerful people the Second Estate was made up of nobility also very powerful. The Third Estate was the largest the group of people were probably 97% made up of some peasants and minium wage people but people who were in the third estate werent very powerful.

    The Paris mob was determined to arm itself due to presence of foreign troops in the streets of Paris. They moved on to the Bastille, an old fortress prison which had long been viewed as a symbol of the king's absolute authority.

    After having their idea be refused by the king, the Third estate did not follow the king's order. On June 17, 1789, the Third estate and some of the First and Second estate who thought the voting should be more fair created the National Assembly. The Assembly went to a a tennis court and created an oath saying they would not leave until the votes were fair.The King relented and let each representative have a vote. Although no violence occured in this event, this was the start of the Revolution.

    The National Assembly used the ideas of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen as their reason for fighting in the French Revolution. The Declaration was about, "liberty, equality, and fraternity" The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was inspired by the American Declaration of Independence, and the ideas of famous Enlightenment Philosophers.

    Creation of the National Convention
    After a mob marched through and attacked Tuileries Palace, the King and Queen and their children were thrown into prison. After all of the mob violence and serious events, the Legisltative Assembly was powerless and voted itself out of existence. There was a new election for a new legislature, which was the National Convention. The National Convention then ordered for the execution for King Louis XVI.

    ON September 5, 1793, The Reign of Terror began when Robespierre declares terror, " the order of the day". This was the beginning of the 2 years of killing" supposed" enmies of the Frenh Revolution. It ended with the fall of Robespierre on July 27, where he was accused, condemned, and guillontined.

    Robespear had a major influence on France. Robespeare was called incorruptable by some and a dictator by others. During Robespierre's time there were the most people sentenced to death in France. Finally people decided that it was time for Robespear had to go.

    Napolean Bonaparte planned a coup against the directory. On November 9 1799 Napoleon Bobaparte staged the coup of 18 Brumaire. This effectively led to Bonaparte's dictatorship and eventually to his proclamation as emperor, which ended the French Revolution.
