King Louis XVI was in power and the 1st and second estates did not pay taxes. The first estate were the church members and the second estate were the aristocrats. The french were poor from funding the american revolution. He called the estates general because of the dire finacial state of the country. Nothing happened due to the 2/1 vote of the estates and the 3rd estate was kicked out of the estate general.

The rebels who had forced the king back to Paris from versaille did not know how to divide his power. There were three main parties that argued over this. There were the conservatives who wanted louis to have power, the moderates only wanted the king to have the power to enforce and the radicals wanted the king dead.

The royal family tried to flee France as peasants because it was too dangerous for them. They were caught and put under house arrest in Paris. All of the European countries got angry at France but agreed to spare Louis. This angered the rebels further.

King Louis was killed on a guillotine and the european countries were outrages at the rebels and attacked from all fronts. Radical marat was murdered. The radical leader robespierre killed more than 1000 people on the guillotine because he was paranoid of people that were not radicals.

The leader of the Jacobins, Marat was killed and a follower of beccaria, Robbespierre began to sentence hundreds of people to the guillotine. Finally Robbespierre was killed. This period was called the great terror.

After the downfall of Robbespierre people began to switch from the radicals and formed an executive branch called the Directory. From there, a man named Napoleon Bonaparte arose and through a coup, made himself the supreme emperor of france.
