    The American Revolution
    The American Revolution officially began when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, although fighting had begun in 1775. The French saw the possibility of success and formally joined the Americans by declaring war against Britain. By the time the war ended in 1783, France had borrowed 1500 million livres to finance its involvement in it. Interest payments on this money totalled 50% of the French government's total revenue.

    At the meeting of the Estates General, in the Palace of Versallies, the Third Estate complained that they represented most of the nation's population, and should have more influence. From this, the Third Estate broke away and called themselves the "National Assembly," to challenge the king and other authorities.

    The Storming of the Bastille occurred in Paris, France on the morning of 14 July 1789. The medieval fortress and prison in Paris known as the Bastille represented royal authority in the center of Paris.   • Bread March

    The march began among women in the marketplaces of Paris who, on the morning of 5 October 1789, were near rioting over the high price and scarcity of bread. These events effectively ended the independent authority of the king.     The guillotine was invented on October 10, 1789 by a French doctor of medicine: Joseph Ignace Guillotin.Though he never actually created it, he had proposed the idea, since he wanted a more humane method of execution instead of decapitation by an axe, which was messy and took several tries.Though he never invented it, the guillotine was named after him, but he regreted its creation.The guillotine first rose in popularity in the French Revolution,where it was commonly used for executions.

  • Committee of Public Saftey

    On April 6, 1793 The Committee of Public Safety was assembled by the Girodins in order to maintain order and protect Frane. Shortly after, the Committee was ceased by Maximellen Robespierre who then rose to power. By September 1793 Robespierre began to execute people for betraying the revolution. During this Reign of Terror 50,000 people were killed at the guillotine. On July 27, 1794 Robespierre was arrested and exedcuted, marking the end of the Reign of Terror.

    Novemeber 9th and 10th, 1799 the Directory of France was overthrown by General Napoleon Bonaparte. This lead to the end of the French Revolution. From there General Napolenon Bonaparte became the "head" of france, soon reigning as emperor.
