    After Cardinal Mazarin died in 1661, King Louis XIV kept a strict routine and also fostered the myth of himself as the Sun King. Sun King means the source of light for all his people.

    Louis XIV personally participated in the campaigns of the ensuing War of Devotion. The war broke out in 1667.

    Louis XIV decided to build and transform the small royal hunting lodge at Versailles outside of Paris.
    He built it into a magnificent palace with huge elaborate gardens and fountains. The palace was never finished, but in 1682 it became the official residence of the king, seat of government, and the court.

    Louis XIV issued the Edict of Fontainebleau. The Edict of Fontainebleau gets rid of the protection of the Huguenots. It destroyed all Huguenot churches in France as well ass all the Portestant schools.

    King Louis XIV died at the age of 77. He died after the Peace of Utrecht which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. He was succeeded by his great-grandson. His name was Louis XV.
