    In 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to church door criticizing the practices of the Catholic Church, While he had many criticisms, his main concern was the selling of indulgences (to build St. Peters Basicalle). Consquently, religious reformers throughout Europe, including John Calvin and Henry VIII, openly challenged the church.

    Peace of Augsburg (Political)

    After nearly 4 decades of fighting, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V granted permission to the Roman Empire's princes to select the religion of the state. As a result, we the Holy Roman Empire split, nearly evenly, between Lutherns and Catholics. To the North, Lutherns dominated while in the south Catholicism, under the protection of the Spanish crown, prevailed. Despite this concession, Calvinism, another prominant religion was denounced by both the Catholics and the Calvinists.
  • The Beginning of the Bohemian Phase (Religious)

    Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II, upon taking the throne, reversed policies set by his successor, and refused to be tolerant of Protestants. As a result, Protestant leaders rebelled in Bohemia, even throwing Cathoiic leaders out of a window and nameing a new Holy Roman Emperor. This, of course, meant war, and Ferdinand the II invoed Bohemia.
