    King Henry VIII splits from the Roman Catholic Church which creates further religious conflict in England. This helped move the conflict between Christian sects even faster and began the stuggles between the King and Parliament.
  • Dissolving of Parliament

    Dissolving of Parliament
    Charles I realized that a conflict was arrising with Parliament in Buckingham and they were planning on gaining the power to choose the King's ministers for him. Charles decided to dissolve Parliament to prevent that conflict but ended up angering Parliament and setting them up for further conflicts.
  • Ship Money

    Ship Money
    Charles I found a way to get money for war without Parliament's permission. He put a tax on shipowners. Parliament did not like that he had the power to work around their authority. This as well as his religious beliefs eventually lead to his execution.
  • English Civil War

    English Civil War
    Cavaliers and Roundheads fought over the type of government. The Roundheads supported a parlimentary government and the Cavaliers wanted a monarchy. These two groups also fought over religious differences.
  • Test Act

    Parliament made this act so that people who wanted political power had to swear that they did not believe in certain Catholic views. This ensured that all important rulers were Protestant and therefore, loyal to Parliament.
  • Royal Declaration of Indulgence

    Royal Declaration of Indulgence
    Charles II tried to pass this Declaration. It would establish more religious freedom particularily for Catholics. Parliament did not like that idea and did not want a Catholic supporting King. They refused to fund the war unless Charles rescinded the Declaration.

    Parliament Passes English Bill of Rights
    This set of rights created joint rulers in England which gave Parliament more power. They were allowed to have more control over those rulers.
